Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue

Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue We’re a 501(c)3 horse sanctuary in Dover Plains, NY dedicated to "People Helping Horses Heal People”!
(209)

People Helping Horses Heal People is the mission that guides everything we do. It holds us to the highest standard of care and rehabilitation for our horses and is at the heart of our educational approach and programming. As a sanctuary, we are committed to the life-long wellbeing of our horses and believe in the healing bond between humans and horses. Since Lucky Orphans opened its barn doors in

2008 we have helped many horses, along with some sheep and goats, find a more promising and meaningful future. It is our goal to not only save these wonderful animals but to also strengthen the relationship between people and animals to build a more compassionate future. We are proud to be permitted by NYS Ag & Markets, Accredited by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance and The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. We are also approved by the NYS Office of Professions for Equine Assisted Psychotherapy.

🐎💙 Some Thoroughbreds are born with expectations before they ever take their first breath.
Flash Me was one of them.
Bred by Barry Schwartz, Flash entered the world with a pedigree, a future, and a purpose already chosen for him.
Like so many Thoroughbreds, he was bred to run.
But racing is only one chapter of a Thoroughbred's story.
Today, Flash's value isn't measured by races or accomplishments.
It's measured in quiet moments.
The friendships he's built.
The life he gets to live.
The future he was given.
Flash was later found at a Thoroughbred dispersal and given a second chance through Take The Lead before arriving at Lucky Orphans.
Today, he represents what aftercare is truly about.
Not retirement.
Not rescue.
Respect.
💙 Help us provide horses like Flash with the future they've earned:

🐎💙 Horse of the Week: Cuervo
When Cuervo arrived at Lucky Orphans, he was just three weeks old.
Underweight.
Covered in lice.
Suffering from maggots beneath his skin.
No foal should begin life that way.
But Cuervo's story isn't about what happened to him.
It's about what he became.
Today, Cuervo is a confident herd leader, a beloved member of our program team, and one of the friendliest horses on the farm.
He's curious.
He's brave.
He loves people.
And he even loves music.
As he's gotten older, Cuervo has developed osteoporosis in his legs and requires additional care to remain comfortable. He needs your support now more than ever to help with his medical bills.
After everything he's overcome, supporting him is a promise we're proud to keep.

From a fragile beginning to a strong and steady leader, Cuervo reminds us what's possible when someone gets a second chance.

In Memory of Cadbury
1994 – 2026

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Cadbury, a beloved member of the Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue family.

Cadbury's journey with us began in 2003 when she was rescued from a camp in Patterson, New York, along with two other horses. While she arrived only green broke, it quickly became clear that she possessed all the qualities that make a truly special horse—intelligence, kindness, curiosity, and a genuine desire to connect with people.

After completing her training, Cadbury became a cherished lesson, trail, and show horse. Smart, eager to please, and especially fond of children, she spent years helping riders build confidence and skills both in and out of the saddle. Many local youth remember learning from her at 4-H demonstrations and lessons at the Dutchess County Fair, where she patiently introduced countless children to the world of horses.

As she entered retirement, Cadbury seamlessly transitioned into a new role, sharing her gentle nature through equine-assisted sessions. Her calm presence, expressive eyes, and patient demeanor made her a favorite among participants and staff alike. Whether teaching a beginner rider, carrying a child down a trail, or simply standing quietly beside someone in need of comfort, Cadbury had a remarkable ability to make people feel safe and seen.

At 32 years old, Cadbury leaves behind a legacy measured not in ribbons or accomplishments, but in lives touched. She helped raise generations of horse lovers, taught lessons that extended far beyond horsemanship, and embodied the very spirit of what Lucky Orphans strives to be.

We will miss her nickers at feeding time, her gentle soul, and the countless memories she helped create over the last 23 years.

If Cadbury touched your life, we invite you to share your favorite photos, stories, and memories in the comments. We know there are many former students, volunteers, staff, and friends whose lives were made better because of her.

Donations in Cadbury's memory may be made to Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue to help provide lifelong care for the horses who call our sanctuary home and ensure that more horses can leave behind uncertain futures and find the same love, safety, and purpose that Cadbury enjoyed for so many years.

Run free, sweet girl. Thank you for 23 wonderful years. You were deeply loved, and you will never be forgotten. 🧡🐴

Forever in our hearts.
