Patients of the Week🩷

These young possums were orphaned when they were barely 50 grams, fragile and completely dependent on care to survive. Now grown, they’ve graduated to an outdoor enclosure where they’re acclimating to the changing weather and preparing for independence. In only a few more weeks, they’ll be ready for release and the chance to thrive on their own in the wild.

Baby Season is keeping us busy!!! 🦊 🦉 🐿️

TreeHouse Wildlife Center is approaching 800 patients for the year, and we continue to see more orphaned and injured wildlife arrive every day. 💔

From tiny baby squirrels to large birds of prey, each animal needs specialized food, medical care, and rehabilitation before they can return to the wild!

To help us care for these patients, we've launched our Baby Season Rescue Fund! 💵

OH NO! You’ve stumbled upon wildlife too young to be on their own… what now? The initial instinct can be to immediately scoop them up, take them inside, and offer food and water. While intentions are good, the outcome is detrimentally not…

Squirrels often fall victim to this scenario. Search engine results show that young squirrels can be fed kitten or puppy replacement milk. This lacks the necessary and vital nutrients that squirrels need in order to healthily develop. Pictured are squirrels who were improperly fed before being admitted into Treehouse Wildlife Center’s care compared to healthy squirrels of similar age. If you find orphaned, injured or ill wildlife please contact a licensed wildlife care professional in your area: wildlifeillinois.org

DO: Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility for further instruction
DON’T: Rely on the internet for information

DO: Monitor the area to see if a parent will return
DON’T: Immediately touch or pick up the animal unless it is visibly injured or in harm’s way

DO: Keep the animal in a dark, quiet contained space until transported to a trained professional
DON’T: Offer the animal any food or water

These Two baby flying squirrels from Godfrey were admitted to the center on May 15th after their tree was cut down during maintenance work. Since arriving, the pair has been staying warm and cozy together in their little hammock while receiving medication as a precaution for possible head trauma. Despite their unexpected adventure, they are doing well and can’t wait to return home.

Fun Fact: Southern Flying Squirrels only grow to be 2-4 ounces and are North America’s smallest squirrel!
