🥞 PANCAKE BREAKFAST WITH A PURPOSE 🥞

Our next Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department Pancake Breakfast is quickly approaching. While these breakfasts have always been about bringing our community together, this one carries a little more meaning for all of us.

This time of year marks one year since we lost one of our own, Firefighter Mark Herman. Mark’s death by su***de left a hole in our department and served as a painful reminder of something that far too many first responders face in silence.

Su***de awareness and mental health among first responders cannot be something we are afraid to talk about.

Firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement officers, dispatchers and other first responders regularly see and experience things that most people will never have to. We are trained to show up when someone else is having the worst day of their life. What we aren’t always good at is admitting when we are struggling ourselves.

PTSD, depression, stress and su***de do not care what uniform you wear, how many years you’ve served, how tough you are or how many people you’ve helped.

Recent events have brought this reality painfully close to home again with the loss of Cass County Sheriff’s Office Detective Joseph “Joe” Sheteron. Our hearts remain with his family, friends and everyone at the Cass County Sheriff's Office Cass County 911 - Michigan as they mourn the loss of one of their own.

In Mark’s memory, we have created a limited number of Su***de Awareness shirts that will be available for purchase at our upcoming Pancake Breakfast. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Proceeds from the breakfast will be donated to Unite The Lines Foundation, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting first responders, raising su***de awareness, helping those struggling with PTSD and mental health, and connecting first responders with people who understand and are willing to listen.

We also plan to donate a portion of the proceeds from this Pancake Breakfast to Detective Sheteron’s family as they navigate an unimaginable loss.

This breakfast is about more than pancakes.

It’s about remembering Mark.

It’s about standing beside the Sheteron family and our brothers and sisters at the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

It’s about reminding every first responder that asking for help is not weakness. Talking about what you’re going through is not weakness. Checking on the person beside you matters.

Sometimes the person who is always there for everyone else needs someone to be there for them.

Come have breakfast with us, pick up one of our limited Su***de Awareness shirts, and help us support those who spend their lives supporting others.

Our hearts are with everyone at the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, as well as Detective Sheteron’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

This loss hits especially close to home for us, as we are approaching the one-year anniversary of losing one of our own.

You never truly know the battles someone may be facing behind the uniform or behind closed doors. Moments like this are a heartbreaking reminder to check on one another, support one another, and never be afraid to reach out.

From all of us at the Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department, we grieve alongside you. We pray for peace, comfort, and strength for Detective Sheteron’s family, his brothers and sisters at CCSO, and everyone whose life he touched.

Rest easy, Detective. We’ll take it from here.

This past week, your Indian Lake firefighters partnered with the staff at the Yacht Club for hands-on training focused on gasoline spill response at the marina fueling docks.

During the training, crews and Yacht Club staff worked together on proper spill containment procedures, deployment of absorbent booms and pads, scene safety, and the initial actions needed to help protect our waterways while awaiting additional resources if needed.

We truly appreciate the Yacht Club’s commitment to emergency preparedness and their investment in having spill response equipment readily available on site. Partnerships like these help ensure we’re all better prepared to respond quickly and effectively should an incident occur.

Yesterday, your Indian Lake firefighters were proud to provide fire protection coverage at the Cass County Fairgrounds alongside our partners from Sepsa Fire Authority.

Working together ensures fairgoers, exhibitors, and staff have a safe environment to enjoy everything the fair has to offer. We appreciate the opportunity to serve our community and the strong partnership between our departments.

Last week, your Indian Lake firefighters spent the evening sharpening their open water rescue skills. Crews trained on multiple rescue techniques, including victim rescues using water rescue devices, hands-on rescue methods, and spinal immobilization with backboarding of patients in the water.

Training like this helps ensure our firefighters are prepared to respond safely and effectively when seconds matter on the lake.

This past training night , your Indian Lake firefighters spent time on the water conducting boat operations training on Indian Lake.

Training like this helps ensure our crews are prepared to respond quickly and safely when every second counts. During this evolution, firefighters practiced maneuvering the rescue boat and bringing it alongside a floating ball that simulated a victim in the water. While it may look simple, precision boat handling is a critical skill that requires constant practice.

Whether it’s a boater in distress, a swimmer in trouble, or another emergency on the lake, regular training helps ensure we’re ready to serve our community when called upon.

🇺🇸 What a Weekend at Indian Lake Fire! 🚒🥞

As another incredible Fourth of July weekend comes to a close, we want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make it such a success.

Our weekend started with a busy Friday, as our firefighters responded to numerous storm-related calls throughout our community. Then Saturday our crews immediately shifted gears to provide coverage on Indian Lake for the Cardboard Boat Race, Boat Parade, and the evening fireworks celebration, helping keep everyone safe while enjoying the holiday.

Today, so many of you came out to support us at our Annual Pancake Breakfast. We are humbled to say we served nearly 600 people! Around 10:00 a.m., it seemed like half of those guests arrived all at once. While our family-style serving has significantly improved the flow over the years, a large crowd arriving at the same time can still create some delays. To everyone who waited patiently—we sincerely appreciate your understanding and support.

Weekends like this are a great reminder of what makes our community so special. Your continued support allows us to serve the residents in our district and we never take that for granted.

Finally, a huge thank you to our dedicated firefighters, auxiliary members, and their families. From fire calls, public safety coverage, and serving hundreds of breakfasts, your commitment and teamwork never wavered. We couldn’t do any of this without you.

From all of us at Indian Lake Volunteer Fire Department, thank you for another unforgettable Fourth of July weekend. We hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday, and we look forward to serving this amazing community for many years to come. ❤️🚒🇺🇸

This morning, Indian Lake Fire crews were out on the water providing standby coverage and water rescue capabilities during the annual Cardboard Boat Race.

We’re proud to support this fun community tradition and help ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable event.

We hope everyone had a fantastic time, and thank you to all the organizers, volunteers, racers, and spectators who made the event another success. Stay safe and enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!

⚠️ Update: Indian Lake Rd is Back Open

Indian Lake Road is currently closed at Old M-62 and Hunt Drive due to downed trees and power lines.

Please use extreme caution and avoid the area. Never drive around barricades or approach downed power lines—they should always be considered energized.

Your Indian Lake Firefighters have been working throughout the area clearing trees from roadways wherever it is safe to do so, helping reopen roads and improve access for emergency vehicles and the public.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation as cleanup continues.
