Dowling Public Library

Dowling Public Library History The Dowling Public Library was founded in 1941 When Mrs. Lloyd Gaskill and Mrs. Clara Rees petitioned the W. K. In 1982 Mrs.
(3)

Kellogg foundation for assistance in organizing such a venture. In 1947 Howard Drake offered his two story ice house as a building for the library and it was cut in two and moved to the foundation of the old meat market building east of M-37 on Dowling Road. Through the efforts of the Dowling Booster Club and other civic groups an addition to the structure was made in 1953 which doubled the capaci

ty of the library. In 1969 the library had again outgrown its boundary's and another addition was built on the back. Irene Dickerson deeded surrounding land to the library property. She was a school teacher and took great interest in the library activities. The gift made room for a much needed, larger new library and parking space. It moved to its current location in 1989.
