Many of us have noticed the night sky in Downingtown is not as dark as it once was. Brighter streetlights, parking lots that stay lit all night, and new development have increased light pollution across town. That glow affects your sleep, wastes energy, and disrupts birds and other wildlife that depend on natural darkness. The U.S. wastes an estimated 30% of outdoor lighting each year due to poor design and overlighting, which drives up costs for taxpayers and residents. This is an environmental issue, but it is also a quality of life issue, and it is one we can address with smarter lighting, better shielding, and thoughtful planning.
