November is pancreatic cancer awareness month. This coming March, 2022, will mark 13 years since my mom’s passing. The Wanda Bilec Foundation was established in 2010 to raise awareness, support patients & families, and progress research in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Over the past 11 years, monies raised have been donated to three main causes: the national organization of PANCAN; researcher and surgeon, Dr. Moser, of Beth Israel Deaconess Harvard; and Dr. Jonathan Brody, and his team at Brody Labs at Jefferson. Donations have also supported various families in their personal fight against pancreatic cancer.
In August 2020, my family suffered another devastating loss, the sudden passing of our dad, and biggest supporter. After heartfelt consideration, we feel it is time we let the foundation go. However, we do not want all of the hard work and unbelievable support go unnoticed or forgotten. That being said, we have decided to raise enough money to start an endowment with Jefferson Hospital. Meaning, we will donate $50,000 to Jefferson for their pancreatic cancer research. About 4.5% of that is used each year to support the research. More specifically, about $2,250 from the 50K. This endowment would allow us to not only keep alive the memory of my mom, and all the others we have supported through the years. We are $8,000 short of that 50 K, but remain determined to meet our goal. Anticipate a few pop-up fundraising events and a bigger event next February/March of 2022.
