Effective Friday morning (10/24/2025) the burn ban is being lifted.

Please be responsible when burning and remember (see flyer attached in original post) you cannot burn products such as (but not limited to) household garbage, tires, shingles, etc.

U.S. Route 150 near Cedar Street in Downs will be closed for an extended period of time for an ongoing crash investigation. The estimated road closure time is at least 5 hours. Please seek an alternate route of travel.

Burn ban continued at the county level through 10/17. While we got some rain the other day it was not enough to reverse the dry/drought conditions.

If you need to report illegal burning (during a ban or otherwise), it should be reported through 911. Our page is not monitored and if you call into our station to report illegal burning (or any emergency) they will refer you to 911.

If you do have questions about the burn ban, are unsure if you are in our district or fall under City of Bloomington guidelines, etc. you can call our station at 309-378-2021 and select the option to speak to Fire Chief Josh Guin.

Fire prevention week kicks off today and the theme this year is “Charge into Fire Safety” for education about safe use of Lithium-Ion batteries.

Burn ban extended until Friday 10/3 includes our fire district.

Our fire district includes the Village of Downs as well as Old Town Township and Downs Township (both which contain addresses often referred to as rural Bloomington)

FYI burn ban is still in effect until 9/26 despite the little bit of rain received yesterday. We are still in very dry conditions and embers from open burning pose a significant risk.

Note the county wide open burn ban currently goes until Friday 9/26. Our original one we issued was only until 9/22.

We have responded to three open burns in our district since Thursday. Please continue to share with friends/family in the area as we recognize not everyone is on Facebook and other social media channels.
