We weren’t expecting to find a Flock Safety camera watching the proposed data center property.

In the middle of rural land, before construction is even underway, there’s already an automated license plate reader aimed at the site.

We’re not jumping to conclusions. We’re asking questions.

Who installed it?
Who authorized it?
Who has access to the data?
Why was this location chosen?

Public projects deserve public transparency. If anyone has answers, we’d love to hear them.

On June 23, Sioux Falls picks its next mayor in a runoff between Christine Erickson and Jamie Smith. Most coverage frames the two as broadly similar. On one issue that will shape the city for a generation — hyperscale data centers — they are not. Their own words, their own records, and their own campaign-finance filings point in opposite directions.

A Note from Let Sioux Falls Vote

Let Sioux Falls Vote has endorsed Jamie Smith for Mayor.

Because there has been public confusion involving our name and our work, we want to clarify who speaks for this committee and why we made these endorsements.

Samantha Scarlata is not part of Let Sioux Falls Vote. While she was involved in the formation of the effort in January, her involvement with the committee ended at the end of that month. Amanda Kendall serves as Chair and is the only authorized voice of Let Sioux Falls Vote.

The work since January, including the petition effort, community conversations, voter engagement initiatives, and these endorsements, has been carried forward by the volunteers and leadership who remained. This committee is not connected to and does not support Ms. Scarlata’s campaign or her personal endorsements. Any statements she makes regarding Let Sioux Falls Vote represent her views alone.

Our endorsement came down to which candidate demonstrated a commitment to transparency, public engagement, and giving residents a meaningful voice in decisions that shape our city. Jamie Smith was the clear choice because he engaged with us from the very start or the data center petition effort. Jamie Smith signed our petition, he held forums, he sat down with us, he attended our Community Conversations. We actively reached out to Christine Erickson to engage with our committee but received no response back from communications from our active members.

We also considered campaign finance disclosures. We were concerned to see significant financial support for Christine Erickson’s campaign coming from the city’s established development and business interests, including a single $100,000 contribution from a political action committee whose donors include some of the most prominent development, banking, and real estate figures in Sioux Falls.

Ultimately, we chose to endorse candidates who have consistently shown a willingness to engage directly with residents, participate in community conversations, and support a more open and accessible local government.

We are proud of the work our volunteers have done and grateful to the thousands of Sioux Falls residents who have participated in this effort. Our endorsements reflect our belief that public trust is built through transparency, accountability, and meaningful community involvement.

Big news!

Let Sioux Falls Vote has officially endorsed our campaign for Sioux Falls City Council At-Large.

The neighbors who organized for transparent, accountable government looked at our campaign and said: this is the direction Sioux Falls needs to go.

They started as a petition drive on January 6th. They gathered signatures. Then they did something remarkable. They engaged City Hall. They pushed for listening sessions. Real conversations where people could actually be heard.

The city listened. Now the city helps sponsor their Community Conversations.

What started as one moment became an established movement. And they believe we can take what they've built and make it the standard at City Hall.

That's exactly what I'm running for. A government that listens. That makes decisions with people, not for them. That brings more voices to the table because better decisions come from more voices in the room.

After months of listening, organizing, gathering signatures, attending meetings, asking questions, and pushing for public participation in decisions that impact our city, Let Sioux Falls Vote is proud to endorse Jamie Smith for Mayor, Vince Danh for City Council At-Large A, and Zach DeBoer for City Council Central District.

This endorsement comes down to one thing: who is willing to listen to the people of Sioux Falls and who is willing to fight for transparent, accountable government.

When residents raised concerns about hyperscale data centers, these candidates showed up. They listened. They engaged with community members. They understood that major decisions affecting our water, energy infrastructure, tax dollars, and long term future deserve meaningful public input.

We believe local government works best when decisions are made with the community, not for the community.

Jamie Smith, Vince Danh, and Zach DeBoer have demonstrated a commitment to greater transparency, stronger public engagement, and a government that values residents’ voices. They understand that public trust is built through openness, accessibility, and accountability.

Our organization was founded on a simple principle: the people of Sioux Falls deserve a seat at the table when decisions with lasting consequences are being made. We believe these candidates share that principle.

This election is about more than any single issue. It is about the future of local government in Sioux Falls. It is about whether residents will have a meaningful voice in shaping their community.

For those reasons, Let Sioux Falls Vote is proud to stand behind Jamie Smith, Vince Danh, and Zach DeBoer.

During Monday’s Downtown Sioux Falls Rotary Club mayoral debate, Christine Erickson stated that she wanted to meet with people who have concerns about the proposed data center project.

That statement is difficult to reconcile with our experience.

Let Sioux Falls Vote was the committee that organized and led the citizen petition effort surrounding this project. As concerns about the data center continued to grow, we reached out to Councilor Erickson on May 19 and requested a meeting to discuss those concerns directly.

We never received a response.

The reality is that residents didn’t suddenly become concerned about this project this week. Community members have been asking questions about the data center’s impact, transparency, infrastructure demands, and long term implications for Sioux Falls for months.

The opportunity to engage with the organizers of this effort existed before signatures were gathered. It existed before petitions were filed. It existed before the issue became impossible to ignore.

In contrast, Jamie had signed our petition, he also met with members of our organization, and he attended our Community Conversations where residents were discussing issues impacting Sioux Falls, including concerns surrounding major development projects, hyper scale data centers, and the future of our city. Whether people agreed with him or not, he showed a willingness to listen and engage directly with residents.

That is why statements about wanting to meet with organizers now feel disingenuous.

Leadership is not waiting until an issue reaches the debate stage to hear from the people involved. Leadership is being willing to listen when those people first reach out.

The organizers were available.
The residents were available.
The conversation was available.

The question is, why wasn’t the interest there then?
