This week the Florida Legislature passed new congressional maps that eliminate Tampa Bay’s only Democratic seat in Congress.

The bill’s own Republican sponsor stood at the podium and said the maps don’t comply with the Florida Constitution.

Then they passed it anyway.

Four Republican senators voted no — calling the maps unconstitutional on the record. The Callais ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act the same morning Florida passed its gerrymander.

Florida voters passed the Fair Districts Amendment in 2010 with 60% of the vote. It’s in our state constitution. It explicitly bans partisan gerrymandering.

Tallahassee just ignored it.

Lawsuits are coming. Common Cause, the Florida Democratic Party, and national redistricting organizations have all announced legal challenges.

But Florida primaries are in August — the clock is ticking.
