Above and Beyond the Call - Since 1874 The total complement is 120 members.

-The Utica Fire Department protects 65,000 residents in 17.5 Sq. miles. 5 Engine companies, 2 Truck Companies (one being a Tower Ladder/Quint), 3 Ambulances, 1 Tactical Unit (Rescue 2) and a Deputy Chief (Car 4) respond from 6 Stations. All members with the exception of the chief, are members of the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) local 32 and NYSPFFA.
-Engine and Truck compan

ies are normally staffed with 1 officer and 2 firefighters, the Rescue and Ambulances are staffed with 1 officer and 1 firefighter. The citywide commander (Car 4) is a Deputy Chief.
-All Engines are manned with at least two Paramedic/EMT's at all times and all apparatus are equipped with automatic defibrillators. Rescue 2, Tower Ladder 2, and Truck 1 carry the Jaws of Life, Air Bags, blocking and other extrication equipment. The Rescue & Ambulances are Advanced Life Support (ALS) response unit, staffed by Level III and or Paramedics. The Utica Fire Department has provided first response BLS and ALS service since 1980. Transport is provided by our ambulance service.
-Dispatching is done from the Oneida County 911 Communications Center.
-Hazardous Material Emergencies are handled by the Fire Departments HAZ-MAT Team. The HAZ-MAT Team utilizes 2 custom designed trailers, pulled by two Chevy Silverado 2500 HD Duramax Diesel Trucks. The trailers are housed at Station 3 on Mohawk Street.

| Person Struck, Killed by Train Near Whitesboro Street in Utica

UPDATED: April 6, 2026

UTICA β€” Utica Police and Utica Fire units were dispatched around 8 p.m. Sunday to the railroad tracks off Whitesboro Street near Handshake City after a CSX train conductor reported that a person had been struck by a train.

Utica Police confirmed the individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Conductors reportedly assisted emergency responders in locating the victim.

The train appeared to be carrying cargo eastbound, meaning no passengers were believed to be directly affected by the incident.

Utica Police Department is investigating the incident in conjunction with CSX Railroad. Train traffic through Utica, including service to and from Union Station, was suspended during the initial investigation.

No additional information was immediately available.

| Foam Used to Battle Fuel-Fed Garage Fire on Wetmore Street In Utica

UPDATED: April 4, 2026

UTICA β€” Utica Fire crews responded to the 1100 block of Wetmore Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 3, 2026, after multiple 911 callers reported a fire.

When firefighters arrived, they found a single-story garage heavily involved, with flames spreading to 1133 Wetmore Street. The fire was contained to the garage area, but also caused damage to part of the home’s exterior.

According to the Utica Fire Department, the fire was fueled by gasoline from a vehicle inside the garage, and crews used foam to help bring the fire under control.

No injuries were reported.

| UFD is on the scene of a garage fire at 1133 Wetmore Street that was reported shortly before 8:30 p.m. Initial reports indicated the fire was spreading to the home. Additional details will be posted as they become available.
