Paunacussing Preserve

Paunacussing Preserve Paunacussing Preserve is a bucolic 102-acre property of meadows and farm fields in central Bucks Cou Learn more at www.natlands.org.

Once part of a larger 400-acre farm, the 108 acres that make up Paunacussing Preserve have been an important thread in the agricultural fabric of the area for several hundred years. Before European settlers farmed the land, the site was home to Native Americans. Many arrowheads and artifacts have turned up on the property, most notably the “Lenape Stone,” which is now a part of the collection of t

he Mercer Museum in Doylestown. The property is home to a restored wetland (once a man-made farm pond, which Natural Lands converted back to a flowing stream in 2009) that is teeming with flora and fauna. Paunacussing Preserve is owned and managed by non-profit conservation organization Natural Lands. The preserve is open by appointment by calling 610-353-5587 ext. 507.

Painted turtles thrive in slow-moving freshwater bodies like ponds, lakes, and marshes. Painted turtles are often seen basking on logs or rocks to regulate their body temperature, as they are ectothermic (cold-blooded).

Though often called a "tulip poplar" or "yellow poplar" due to its straight, poplar-like growth, the tuliptree (Liriodendron tulipifera) is actually a member of the magnolia family, not the poplar family.

“Don’t you know what that is? It’s spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you’ve got it, you want—oh, you don’t quite know what it is you DO want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!”

Most bees native to our region overwinter in a hibernation-like state. When they emerge from their torpor in spring, they need fuel fast. Here are some early spring-blooming shrubs that give them the fuel they need for the season:
Willow (Salix spp.): Among the earliest and most critical sources of both pollen and nectar for bees.
Spicebush (Lindera benzoin): Features small, yellow-green flowers in early spring that bloom before leaves appear.
Serviceberry (Amelanchier laevis or A. arborea): Blooms in March–April, providing an essential early nectar source.
Highbush Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum): Produces bell-shaped flowers highly attractive to bees, including specialists, in spring.
Black Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana): Blooms April–May, offering excellent nectar for bees.
Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis): Known for its bright pink early spring flowers.
Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea): Offers early spring nectar and is suitable for mixed, layered plantings.
New Jersey Tea (Ceanothus americanus): Provides nectar for a variety of pollinators.

Did you know that frogs don’t drink water? Instead, they absorb it through their skin. Because of their sponge-like skin, these critters can be easily poisoned by pollution. A pond full of frogs means the water is clean and healthy.
