Draper Days is our favorite time of the year, with so many events that have become treasured traditions for the community.

An important part of our Draper Days preparations is safety. Draper Police, Fire, and Emergency Management coordinate with our Events staff to review safety practices and plan for emergencies.

Please review the following information before attending Draper Days events.

Lost Children

Children occasionally get separated from their families at large events. Draper Police Department recommends:

• Take a photo of your child (children) before leaving for the event so you have an image to share with officers to show what the child looks like and what they are wearing that day.
• If the child is non-verbal or unable to communicate key details, write contact information for who is responsible for supervising them at the event on a card or paper and pin it to their clothing or have them keep it in their pocket.
• Talk to your child about what they should do if you get separated. Uniformed police officers will be patrolling throughout the park. City Staff can call for an officer also. Remind children not to leave the park with someone they don’t know.

Weather Events

Events are rarely cancelled due to weather, but some severe weather incidents prompt a delay or cancellation.

• Lightning within close proximity to the event could necessitate a temporary evacuation of the area until it passes. If it is frequent and expected to continue for some time, the event may be cancelled.
• High winds or flash flooding can also prompt delays or cancellations of events.
• Trained public safety personnel monitor the weather and determine if delays or cancellations are necessary. Announcements will be made at the location if a temporary or emergency evacuation of the location is warranted. Please follow the instructions of personnel on site. Information will also be shared on City communications channels as soon as possible.

Heat

• Summer temperatures are always present during Draper Days. Bring water, use sunscreen, wear hats or other protective clothing, and take shade and rest breaks often. Free water stations will be available at Draper Park.

Traffic/Parking

• Please mind your speed and be watchful for pedestrians, especially after dark.
• Use the designated event parking areas or park legally on city streets. Please be respectful of everyone’s property.

It has been a great week of Draper Days events so far. We look forward to seeing everyone at the park events and parade in the coming days.

Both Draper City Police and Fire Departments had a quiet weekend with mostly full compliance with the fireworks ban. We appreciate the cooperation of the community with keeping Draper safe from additional fire risk and complying with the fireworks ban over the holiday weekend. THANK YOU!

The sudden and tragic deaths of three firefighters along the Utah-Colorado border over the weekend are hitting especially close to home for the Draper Fire Department.

Clarification for those who have questions about how "fireworks" are defined.

Fireworks Ban Clarification

As a follow-up to the information previously distributed regarding Draper City’s decision to uphold the Utah State Forester’s temporary ban on personal fireworks, we would like to clarify how the term “fireworks” is defined.

Draper City follows the definitions established in the Utah State Code. For additional information, please refer to Utah State Code 53-7-202 – Fireworks Definitions. Please see the details in this update on a temporary ban on personal fireworks use in Draper for the Independence Day holiday period. We appreciate the community's support with this. Our hearts are broken to hear of the loss of wildland fire personnel fighting a fast-spreading wildfire on the Utah/Colorado border.

Fireworks restrictions have changed for July 2026. Governor Cox and the state forester issued an executive order imposing a statewide ban on personal fireworks due to extreme wildfire danger and a state of emergency declaration for several active wildfires in Utah. This order allowed cities to evaluate conditions within their boundaries to determine if any exceptions for personal use would be submitted to the state for approval. After evaluation, Draper City has decided that personal fireworks will not be permitted in any area of Draper for the period that would normally be allowed for the Independence Day holiday - July 2 to 5.

All cities in Salt Lake County are aligned with this decision. Personal fireworks are not permitted anywhere in Salt Lake County, as shown on Salt Lake County Emergency Management's updated Fireworks Restrictions Map (https://saltlakecountyem.gov/be-prepared-community-outreach/fireworks/). Violations can result in fines up to $1,000, and any fires started by illegal fireworks use may result in criminal charges and financial liability for firefighting costs.

Draper City's attached fireworks restrictions map has been updated to show that there are no areas in Draper where personal fireworks use is allowed (including the Utah County section of Draper). Draper City will continue to coordinate with state and county officials on conditions and risk leading up to the next window of use for the Pioneer Day holiday, which starts July 22. An update will be provided ahead of that date regarding the status of restrictions.

In place of personal fireworks use for the July holiday celebrations, residents are encouraged to consider attending professional fireworks displays, which are supervised by fire personnel. As part of Draper Days, a concert with a professional fireworks display will be held on Saturday, July 18. Admission to this event is free. On Friday, July 17, the Draper Days concert will be followed by a drone show celebrating America's 250th anniversary.

Thank you for complying with this ban to help reduce fire risk and protect our neighborhoods, first responders, and open spaces. Our hearts are with the families and colleagues of the three wildland firefighters killed while battling rapidly spreading wildfires along the Utah/Colorado border yesterday.

FYI re: smoky air

Residents in Draper and across Salt Lake and Utah Counties are seeing heavy smoke and ash in the sky. There are no fires currently in Draper or adjacent cities. The air quality is believed to be from strong winds carrying smoke and ash from fires in central Utah into our area. There is also a fire in the Tooele area. Due to active red flag warnings, we encourage residents to stay watchful, but we wanted to reassure everyone that there is no fire activity in Draper at this time.

With conditions already pointing toward an unprecedented wildfire season, Draper City Fire sent out the first wildland crew of the year. These firefighters are assigned to the Initial Attack Task Force for the state of Utah.
