We’ve received a few photos from Doug Wheaton while he’s in Oregon assisting the American Red Cross.

These photos give just a small glimpse of the conditions and devastation these wildfires are creating.

The Grasshopper Fire, burning in the Mt. Hood National Forest area, has now burned approximately 90,667 acres and is about 47% contained. More than 1,500 personnel are assigned to the incident.

Doug continues to serve alongside the Red Cross, helping provide support to communities and families affected by the fires.

It’s a long way from home, but Doug is doing what he has always done — showing up when people need help.

We’re proud to have him serving and representing our department.

Stay safe, Doug. We’ll keep the coffee warm for you back home.

🚨 FIRE AT CUBA, KY FIRE DEPARTMENT 🚨

If you are traveling in the Cuba, Kentucky area, please be advised that the Cuba Fire Department’s fire station is currently on fire near the corner of Hwy 94 and Hwy 303.

Multiple departments, including ours, are either on scene or en route to assist the Cuba Fire Department.

⚠️ PLEASE STAY CLEAR OF THE AREA. The safety of the public and emergency responders is our top priority.

We ask everyone to please avoid the area and do not come to watch, take pictures, or interfere with emergency operations. No looky-loos.

Please give responding apparatus plenty of room and allow firefighters to do their job.

Our thoughts are with the Cuba Fire Department and its members as they work through this difficult situation. 🚒🙏

We are incredibly proud of EMA Captain Doug Wheaton, and one of our own Latham Dukedom Volunteer Firefighters, as he deploys today with the American Red Cross to Bend, Oregon, to assist those affected by the Hidden Forest Wildfire.

Doug continues to show what it truly means to be a volunteer—not only serving our local community, but answering the call wherever he is needed.

Please join us in wishing Doug safe travels and thanking him for his willingness to serve. We are proud to call him one of our own!

🚨📚 SCHOOL STARTS TOMORROW — LET’S KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE! 📚🚨

School starts back tomorrow across the county, and that means our roads are going to be a little busier — especially our country roads and backroads.

🚌 PLEASE WATCH FOR SCHOOL BUSES!

Many of our bus routes travel narrow rural roads with hills, curves, limited visibility, and children getting on and off the bus.

When you see a school bus:
• Slow down and be prepared to stop.
• Stop when the red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended.
• NEVER pass a stopped school bus.
• Watch for children who may be crossing the road.
• Give buses plenty of room, especially on narrow roads.

🚗 DRIVERS — PLEASE REMEMBER:

Just because you’re on a country backroad doesn’t mean you won’t encounter a child, school bus, or another vehicle around the next curve.

⚠️ Slow down around blind curves and hills.
📵 Put the phone down and stay focused.
🚗 Don’t follow school buses too closely.
👀 Watch for children waiting at bus stops.
🌅 Be especially careful during the morning and afternoon school commute.

A few extra seconds of caution could make all the difference.

Our kids don’t get a second chance if something goes wrong.

One in a Million…

Every now and then, a photograph captures more than a moment it captures a memory.

During our Community Appreciation Event, Laney Photography managed to capture what can only be described as a once-in-a-lifetime shot. At the exact moment our fireworks lit up the night sky, a bolt of lightning illuminated the storm in the background. The result is simply breathtaking.

This photo reminds us that sometimes the most incredible moments can’t be planned they just happen.

A huge thank you to Laney Photography for sharing your talent with our community and allowing us to relive such an unforgettable night through your lens. We are honored that you were there to capture this amazing image.

I am truly overwhelmed by the incredible turnout for our Community Appreciation Event. We estimate that around 150 vehicles attended, with an average of 2–4 people per vehicle, for an estimated attendance of 300–600 people. Seeing so many families, friends, and neighbors come together to support our small volunteer fire department was truly humbling.

On behalf of everyone at the Latham & Dukedom Volunteer Fire Department, I want to sincerely thank each and every one of you. The love and support you showed us means more than words can express.

The live auction was a tremendous success, and if you missed the fireworks, you missed an absolutely amazing show! It was a great evening filled with fun, fellowship, and community spirit.

What many people don’t see are the countless hours that go into making an event like this happen. Our firefighters, their spouses, families, and volunteers spent weeks planning, gathering auction donations, setting up, cooking, serving food, directing parking, cleaning up, and making sure everyone had a safe and enjoyable evening. They gave up their time, worked long hours, and did it all because they care deeply about this community.

We also want to extend our heartfelt thanks to every business, family, and individual who donated auction items, helped sponsor the fireworks, donated supplies, or volunteered their time. Over the coming days, we will be recognizing each of our donors and sponsors individually on our page to show our appreciation for their generosity and support.

We hold this event each year simply as our way of saying thank you to everyone who supports our department throughout the year. Your annual fire dues, donations, and encouragement help us continue serving our community, and this is one small way we can give something back. As long as we’re able, this event will continue to be free for everyone.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you for making this one of the biggest and most memorable events we’ve ever had. I am truly humbled and honored to serve as your Fire Chief.
