We'll have some thunderstorms tonight into tomorrow. Forecast calls for a level 1 out of 5 threat for severe weather, but there's already pea sized hail reported in Union City. Stay weather aware!

On and off chances of showers and thunderstorms will continue until Monday evening. The best chances this evening will be across mainly southeast Missouri, then across the entire area late tonight through Monday morning. Chances will end from north to south late Monday. Dry, cooler and less humid conditions will arrive for Tuesday through Thursday.

Last year, WCEMA began working with the Central United States Earthquake Consortium (CUSEC) and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency to support their Critical Facility Infrastructure and Rapid Visual Screening Projects, which provide them with vital information on the impact a significant seismic event could have on our community.

Critical infrastructure across the County was evaluated by engineers and geologists to assess the possible risks associated with seismic activity damage including structural damage, and environmental failure such as soil liquefication.

This is a strong first step in the larger process of earthquake resilience. The raw data gained from this project will take some time to fully process and inventory, but the information will eventually be used to support our Federal, State, and local Hazard Mitigation projects, and Emergency Operations Plans.

So glad we got a chance to share our career with the students at Dresden Elementary School today! Out of everything we had, the kid's favorite part was trying out the lighted traffic wands, lol.

We've had some questions about hantavirus because of the outbreak that occurred on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius.

Bottom line: It's not a pandemic risk at this time.

The Andes strain of the hantavirus which has been identified on the ship is the only known strain that can transmit from person to person, but it doesn't spread efficiently within the general population. It typically requires prolonged, close contact with an infected person for it to transmit.

So if it's not a pandemic risk, why is it in the news? It's a significant event within the virology field, the situation is being monitored by the CDC and WHO, and the situation has gained attention due to the evacuation effort... And probably some sensationalism.

Although it is technically possible for the virus to mutate, it's very, very unlikely.

There are other local strains of the hantavirus you're likely to encounter if you're exposed to rodent droppings or urine, but they are NOT spread from person to person.

Edit: Turning off comments because y'all can't can't act right. The WHO says the risk to public health is low. If that changes, we'll revisit this but it doesn't appear likely at this time.
