🚨 BACK-TO-SCHOOL TRAFFIC ALERT 🚨

As students head back to school Wednesday, August 12, please plan for additional traffic and delays around the city and particularly along RR 12 near Dripping Springs Elementary.

TxDOT continues work on the RR 12 shoulder-widening project in front of Dripping Springs Elementary and has begun the final paving phase.

The project remains on schedule to be completed before the first day of school. Remaining work includes final paving of the roadway and shoulders, followed by restriping.

During paving and striping operations, TxDOT expects to maintain one lane of traffic in each direction by shifting vehicles from one side of the roadway to the other as work progresses. Drivers should expect delays and conditions similar to those currently being experienced.

By Wednesday morning, the intersection of Event Center Drive and RR 12, the primary entrance to Dripping Springs Elementary, is expected to be operating normally, with all turn lanes at the intersection open to traffic.

🚔 Law enforcement will be on site at Dripping Springs Elementary Wednesday during school drop-off and pick-up times to assist with traffic control.

Please continue to use caution in the work zone, watch for construction crews, and allow extra travel time as TxDOT completes the project.

THE TIGERS ARE BACK! And so is the traffic. 🚗🚙🚌

Tomorrow marks the first day back for Dripping Springs ISD, which means our roads will be a little busier as students, families, teachers and staff get back into their school-year routines.

A few friendly reminders for your morning commute:

⏰ Leave early & pack your patience! Give yourself plenty of extra time to get where you’re going. Your normal commute might take a little longer tomorrow!
🚸 Slow down & watch for Tigers! Keep an extra eye out for students walking, biking and crossing near our schools.
🚌 Watch for school buses! Be alert for frequent stops and remember to follow all traffic laws around stopped buses.
👮 Follow directions! Pay attention to law enforcement, crossing guards and school staff helping keep traffic moving safely.

Most importantly, be patient, be courteous and give yourself some extra time. Everyone is getting back into the school routine!

⚠️ SCAM ALERT: Be Aware of Calls and Text Messages Impersonating Others ⚠️

Unfortunately, scams continue to impact our community, and we'd like to remind residents to stay vigilant.

We try to share with the community often to remember: The Sheriff's Office will never call you to demand payment, request gift cards, or instruct you to travel to a specific location to resolve a warrant or legal matter.

We also want to warn the public about other types of scams, including fraudulent text messages.

The screenshot below is from a REAL text message received by a Hays County resident who works remotely. The scammer addressed the individual by their first name and even used their supervisor's full name, making the message appear legitimate. Believing it could have been a work phone, the resident initially responded before quickly recognizing the scam when they were asked to purchase electronic gift cards.

Scammers often use publicly available information to make their messages appear legitimate. They may know your name, where you work, or even the names of your supervisors, coworkers, or family members to gain your trust.

In some cases, they also send emails containing what appear to be legitimate PDF documents. These attachments may be malicious and are designed to install malware or steal your personal information if opened. Always verify the sender before opening unexpected attachments or clicking on links.

Protect yourself by following these tips:

- Never send money, gift cards, or e-certificates to someone based solely on a phone call or text message.
- Verify requests by contacting the person or organization using a trusted phone number—not the one provided in the message.
- Never share personal, financial, or account information with unknown callers or texters.
- If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from the Hays County Sheriff's Office, hang up and contact our office directly to verify the information.

Please help protect our community by sharing this post with your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers. Awareness is one of the best defenses against scams.

🦟 Hays County mosquito traps test positive for West Nile Virus

As part of routine mosquito surveillance, two mosquito trap samples collected in the 78666 ZIP code have tested positive for West Nile Virus. These are the first positive mosquito traps identified in Hays County this season.

There are currently no reported human cases of West Nile Virus in Hays County.

The best way to protect yourself and your family is to follow the Three Ds:

🛡️ DEFEND – Use EPA-approved insect repellent when outdoors.
👕 DRESS – Wear long, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing.
💧 DRAIN – Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes can breed.

While most people infected with West Nile Virus do not develop symptoms, some may experience fever, headache, body aches, rash or other flu-like symptoms. Adults 50 and older and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe illness.

Hays County Development Services conducts mosquito surveillance throughout mosquito season to monitor mosquito populations and help guide prevention efforts.
