The votes are in and certified.
Drummond Island Township has a new official logo, chosen by the people who live here.

Residents and property owners cast 218 ballots, each selecting three designs. The winning logo was created by Kris Kuizenga. Karen Schwalm placed second and Kevin N. Zilch placed third. Congratulations to all three.

Here is what Kris wrote about his design:

“This Drummond Island Township logo celebrates the island’s identity as Michigan’s northernmost gem in Lake Huron. The circular design symbolizes unity, continuity, and the close-knit nature of the community. At its center, the silhouette of Drummond Island provides an instantly recognizable landmark, anchoring the township’s sense of place and honoring its unique geography.

The Islander IV ferry, rendered with clean lines and a refreshed appearance, represents connection, the essential lifeline that links residents and visitors to the mainland. Behind the island, the evergreen pines reflect the island’s rugged natural beauty, resilience, and deep ties to the outdoors. Above them, a stylized bald eagle soars, symbolizing freedom, pride, and stewardship of the land and wildlife.

The compass rose at the top signifies direction, exploration, and the spirit of adventure that defines life on Drummond Island. The navy and white palette conveys professionalism and trust, while the clean typography ensures clarity across signage, documents, and digital platforms.

Together, these elements form a timeless emblem that honors the island’s heritage, its people, and its connection to the Great Lakes, creating a visual identity that is both meaningful and distinctly Drummond Island Township.”

Ten designs met the contest requirements, and every one of them showed real care for this place. Thank you to everyone who entered. Thank you also to everyone who took the time to vote.

Drummond Island Township is inviting both new and returning election inspectors to attend upcoming training. Michigan election inspectors are required to complete training at least once every two years.

Training will be held:
Monday, September 21 at 2 PM
Bruce Township Hall

COMMUNICATIONS OUTAGE UPDATE & IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Following this weekend’s widespread communications outage, cell and landline services have been restored.

We have been advised that the outage was caused by a cut fiber line. The disruption was not specific to Drummond Island and affected communications across a larger area.

Importantly, Chippewa County Central Dispatch continued to receive 911 calls and provide emergency services throughout the outage. First responder radio and paging systems were also unaffected, so emergency response remained operational.

The outage did, however, affect both cellular and landline service for many people. It was a good reminder that we should all know what options are available if another communications outage occurs.

If you have an emergency, always CALL 911 first.

If your 911 call will not go through:
• If you have working Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Calling may allow you to call 911 even when cellular service is unavailable.

• Some newer phones have emergency satellite capabilities. Take a few minutes now to find out whether your phone has this feature and learn how to use it before you need it.

• Text 911 ONLY in an emergency when your voice call to 911 will not go through. If you are able to call 911, please call rather than text.

• If possible, try another phone or carrier, as an outage may not affect every service in the same way.

Another resource to remember is Frank J. Sasso Township Hall. The Township has Starlink internet service, which may remain available when other communications infrastructure is affected. Township Hall is open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 2 PM, and residents are welcome to come in and use the internet if needed.

The Township will also be putting together a simple emergency communications handout for residents.

This weekend’s outage was a good reminder to learn what your phone can do, know your backup options, and have a plan before you need one.

Drummond Island turned out at 37.9 percent for this August’s primary, while the Chippewa County average was 27.9 percent. That is one of the numbers Supervisor Krystal Truax breaks down in the August issue of Moving Forward Together, now posted on the township website.

The issue looks at four August primaries going back to 2020 and what our turnout says about civic engagement here. It also covers how Islanders voted on the four county millage renewals. We said yes to all four, and we backed Ambulance and Fire Protection at 84.7 percent, higher than the county as a whole. There is an explanation of where that ambulance millage money goes and how it helps cover NEMSA coverage for the island.

The issue closes with the dates you need for November. The General Election is Tuesday, November 3rd. Absentee ballots become available September 24th, and October 19th is the deadline to register online or by mail. After that you can still register in person at the Township Office with proof of residency, right through Election Day.

A reminder that the Drummond Island Township Board will hold its regular monthly meeting this Tuesday, September 1 at 6:30 PM at the Frank J. Sasso Township Hall.

Township Board meetings are open to the public, and community members are always welcome to attend.
