May is National Asthma and Allergy Month. As part of the Libraries Partnering with Public Health, we are reminded that refreshing our surroundings isn’t just a household task; it’s a community investment in healthier lives.
More than 100 million people in the United States have asthma and/or allergies. In Montana, 37% of adults with asthma reported having asthma symptoms in the last year. It’s a perfect time to take stock of how our physical environment shapes our health.
Clean, safe housing does more than look good, it reduces asthma triggers, prevents injuries, and eases daily stress. Reducing or removing mold, pests, or clutter supports both respiratory and mental well-being, and neighborhood cleanups can help remove environmental hazards and build community pride. These factors all play a part in determining health.
