Dryden Kitchen Cupboard - Dryden, New York

Dryden Kitchen Cupboard - Dryden, New York Dryden Kitchen Cupboard is a volunteer-run pantry to help locals in need of food. Once a month, town of Dryden residents can receive 3 days worth of food.

Located at the back of the Dryden Presbyterian Church at 6 North Street in Dryden, NY. Our food pantry is organized and run by volunteers. It is mainly supported through community donations and is part of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Our normal hours are: Monday & Friday: 11am - noon; Wednesday: 5-6pm; Last Saturday of the month: 11am-noon. Major holidays and bad weather may affect our

schedule. The Dryden Kitchen Cupboard is able to accept donations of non-expired, non-perishable, undamaged, shelf stable foods in their original unopened container, as well as new hygiene products. Due to food safety standards with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, we are not able to accept private donations of homemade or home-canned food, or food needing to be frozen or refrigerated. If you wish to donate a large amount of non-perishable food, please MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH US FIRST so that we can be sure that we have sufficient space to accept your generosity. Monetary donations are always accepted. Because our food pantry can purchase many foods through the Food Bank of the Southern Tier at a greatly reduced price, a donated dollar can go much further than what most individuals can purchase themselves at a store. The Food Bank of the Southern Tier is a Feeding America food bank that provides food to those in need through a network of pantries and programs. It is a non-profit organization that works to fight hunger in the Southern Tier region of New York state serving Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins counties. Thanks to the collective efforts of almost 40 volunteers who are managed by two co-coordinators, the Dryden Kitchen Cupboard continues to faithfully serve our community multiple times a week.

From food delivery truck unloaders, to shelf stockers, to those who hand out the food, a crew of substitutes, and our social media manager who were joined by several family members, we recently had our annual dish-to-pass picnic.

A huge thank you to all of our awesome volunteers!

Washing your hands after using the bathroom, before preparing food and before eating, has always been standard good hygiene practice.

With the current cyclospora outbreak occurring in numerous states (including New York), it is more important than ever to wash your hands before touching food, and to carefully wash/rinse ALL raw produce, including herbs, fruits, and vegetables, bagged salads, etc. In addition, follow food recommendations for safe preparation and storage by cutting away damaged or bruised areas of produce. To further reduce the risk of this illness, it is also recommended to not eat raw produce.

Untreated cyclosporaisis can last a few days, to in some cases, for many weeks. This illness is caused by a microscopic parasite usually found in food or water contaminated with f***s. Unfortunately, as of this post, the specific source has not yet been identified.

Symptoms include: frequent, explosive watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, and severe fatigue. Signs of infection usually appear one week after consuming contaminated food or water, but can develop anywhere from 2 to 14 days later. Dehydration is a big concern.

If you think you may have developed
cyclosporiasis, consult your healthcare provider or visit an urgent care clinic to request a stool test and discuss appropriate treatment.

The Department is urging New Yorkers to thoroughly wash all fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables and practice good hand hygiene as cases of cyclosporiasis are on the rise. The infection can cause severe diarrhea. Wash your hands before and after handling fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs and wash raw fruits, vegetables and herbs before preparing or eating. Stay safe! Everyone is at risk for heat-related illness, but older adults, children, people who work outdoors, and people with existing health conditions are at more risk of getting sick when it's hot.

Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, but avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks. Don’t forget that medications can also affect how sensitive someone can be to the heat.

Take regular breaks when working or playing outdoors. Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day (between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.).

Try to get some temporary relief by going somewhere that has air conditioning - a store, the library, etc.
