This photo is looking south on Washington Street, near the South Street intersection. The railroad tracks are just visible in the distance. We are uncertain the exact year this was taken, but believe it to be in the mid 1950s. Fuel was just 28¢ per gallon!

🛩This aerial photo of Main Street looking east, was taken some time in the mid 1950s. I found it interesting that there is a gas station on three of the four corners of Hickory and Main, with a new one being built on the forth corner.

A crowd of curious men gather to watch workmen at the building site of the new Horstman’s Cleaners, on the southwest corner of Mulberry and Park Streets, April 8, 1947. They formerly were located at 8 South Division Street. Horstman’s also had locations in Herrin and Carbondale.

This photo shows Schroeder Funeral Home, now Searby Funeral home. The house was build in the 1880's by a man named Hatfield who considered the home to be his masterpiece. It became Schroeder Funeral Home in 1929, followed by Keeling Funeral Home in the 50s, and finally the Searby family purchased it in 1973. The funeral home is still owned and operated by the Searby family.
