Before the night ends, I want to wish Duarte Planning Commission Chair Luz Yesenia Páez a very happy birthday! 🎉🎂

I have seen firsthand how Yesenia shows up for others. She wears her heart on her sleeve, and her love for this city and our community is undeniable.

We need selfless leaders who show up even when it’s hard. Yesenia is a leader who listens, works well with others, and when she disagrees, she does so with grace and respect while making sure her voice is heard.

She is more than qualified and experienced to represent District 1 and our city as a whole. I am proud of her for pursuing her dreams and continuing to serve this community. As a Planning Commissioner, she has already helped bring positive change, and I have no doubt she will continue that work if (when) elected to City Council.

Feliz cumpleaños, Yesenia! 🎉 Keep knocking, keep showing up, and keep fighting for the community you love. Wishing you many more years of happiness and success!

As we head toward Election Day on November 3rd, I humbly ask you to support Luz Yesenia Páez for Duarte City Council, District 1. 🗳️

On September 26, the City held a Street Fest after the Route 66 Parade. We had an incredible car show, live music from Sangria, food trucks, b**r garden, Duarte Dance, and many of our community partners hosted booths and giveaways. Despite the weather being over 100, we had a great time.

Thank you, City staff, volunteers, and sponsors. Our CERT team was really busy that afternoon. Shoutout to Fire Station 44 as well! 🚒

Can’t wait until the City’s 70th anniversary next year! 🥳

If you didn’t attend and want a commemorative pin, stop by City Hall and purchase one there (while supplies last)!

A pleasure meeting the Vallarta Team! They are right on track to opening this month, and they shared that their grand opening is set for Wednesday, October 21st! 🛒

Vallarta is also hiring local talent, bringing new opportunities right here to our community. My family and I are so excited to welcome Vallarta to Duarte and see this location come to life!

Who will be there for the grand opening? 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

See you there!

And that’s a wrap! What an incredible morning. After months of planning, it came and went. Couldn’t be prouder of the committee, sponsors, and the City support.

I can’t get myself to make a reel recapping everything, but be expecting one 😜

In addition to the parade this morning and setting up the PA system, I worked the Kiwanis booth selling waters and sodas, raising funds for student scholarships.

Thank you to everyone who purchased from us today, but a special shout out to my family that helped load, unload, and do it all over again after Street Fest. I couldn’t have done it without you. Michelle Garcia 👑 Jonathan Johnson Danny Betancourt-Garcia

I hope you all enjoyed it, see you @ the 150th anniversary haha (just kidding 😉)

I am so excited!

Vallarta Supermarkets is looking to hire around 200 team members for their Duarte location, which is opening VERY, VERY SOON!! 🛒🎉

The City of Duarte has partnered with Vallarta to assist with the recruitment of these new team members, and we’ll be having weekly job fairs at the Duarte Community Center!

If you know someone who would make a great asset to the Vallarta team, have them follow the instructions on the flyer to apply and learn more.

This is a HUGE opportunity for our community, and I’m so excited to see this new business opening its doors in Duarte!

I want to thank my colleague, Councilmember Truong, for representing us today at the Contract Cities Fall Educational Summit, where he spoke on a panel about how multiple agencies can work together to address challenges in our communities.

The North San Gabriel River Working Group started in 2020 with the cities of Azusa, Irwindale, and Duarte, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in response to multiple fires in the riverbed. I am proud to have been part of this group since 2022.

In 2024, we strengthened the working group by forming an MOU, and in 2025, the group mobilized and became even stronger when the EPA turned the area into a HHW sorting and staging site. This ultimately led to the formation of a JPA this year.

A big supporter of this group has been Senator Susan Rubio, who secured funding for us in 2024 and again this year for public safety efforts inside the riverbed.

Where there were once over 350 unhoused individuals living in the riverbed, we are now down to single digits. Our cities have made necessary efforts to conduct extra patrols and outreach operations in and around the riverbed, connecting individuals to health and housing services through weekly convoys with law enforcement partners, the SGV Care Team, and LA CADA.

We have also partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District on several encampment cleanup projects to remove debris from the riverbanks, including shopping carts, campsite materials, abandoned vehicles, propane tanks, and gasoline cans.

This past month, we have seen an increase in fires in the southern parts of the riverbed. We have requested assistance from all of our partners to conduct cleanups in that area. At our last cleanup, over 4 tons of trash and debris were removed. As you can imagine, that takes a tremendous amount of resources.

This is why partnerships like the North San Gabriel River Working Group are so important. It takes multiple agencies working together to make a difference.

Thank you, Councilmember Truong, for representing us today and continuing this important work.

On June 18, in Koreatown, at a FIFA watch party, a gunman opened fire into the crowd enjoying the event. Luis Romero jumped into action and helped take down the gunman, resulting in him being shot in the thigh.

Mr. Romero has lived in Duarte for over 14 years, and it was an honor to present him with a plaque from the City of Duarte, along with certificates of recognition from Senator Susan Rubio, Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, and Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

We will never know how many lives were saved that day thanks to his quick and brave actions.

I also want to thank LAPD Deputy Zheng, who helped save Mr. Romero’s life by quickly applying a tourniquet to his leg.

Gracias Señor Romero por su valentía 👏🏽
