Congratulations to Deborah DeSantis who completed her Master Hiker designation at Staunton River State Park

Here is what she said about her journey:

“When I first learned about Trail Quest, I was a full-time caregiver for my mom. She was 82 at the time and has dementia. She and I visited eight parks together, and I would push her in her wheelchair, including on multiple visits to the battlefield.

I made a point of revisiting all the parks I had been to before so I could officially complete them all within the 3.5-year time period.

I met my two best hiking buddies, Kerry Carmichael and Patricia Hays, while hosting women-only hikes to help others with Trail Quest. Between the three of us, we have hiked 18 state parks together. We love taking our time and enjoying the views. As a former ambassador for the women’s group, I often suggested that beginner hikers start with Virginia State Parks, especially if they were hiking solo.

Favorite parks: Fairy Stone State Park — I love everything about this park, from the original CCC cabins to the lake, trails and campground, especially in spring when the azaleas and rhododendrons are blooming.

Claytor Lake State Park and Douthat State Park are close seconds, though I love them all. Wilderness Road State Park surprised me the most. I loved the bison and the reconstructed Martin’s Station fort. There were living history interpreters when we visited.

I’ve discovered some of Virginia’s most beautiful places through Trail Quest, as well as met amazing people and made wonderful memories. I truly love Virginia State Parks."

Thank you for sharing your journey and for being part of the Trail Quest and Virginia State Park family!
