Today, I am announcing that Joshua J. Smith has stepped down from his position as Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

On behalf of the Bureau, I want to thank Josh for his service and contributions and wish him and his family all the best in the future.

The Bureau remains focused on our mission of protecting public safety, maintaining safe and secure facilities, and supporting our workforce and the individuals in our care.

Reflecting on I have more years behind me now than in front, I want to say; “No one at the end of life said, I wish I would have saved that money.” So pullout that TSP money and go buy yourself something pretty 🤩. Don’t leave that cash for your kids, they will take the trip you should have took.✈️🚢

More Prison closures.

Today, the Federal Bureau of Prisons announced facility closures and operational changes due to longstanding staffing shortages and a substantial maintenance backlog that have accumulated over decades across the agency. The Bureau will close the following institutions: Beaumont FCI Low; Big Spring FCI and Satellite Camp; La Tuna FCI, FSL, and Satellite Camp; Lexington FMC Satellite Camp; Petersburg FCI Low; and Taft FCI. In addition, Morgantown FPC and Duluth FPC will transition from minimum-security camps to Federal Satellite Low (FSL) facilities.
