***PUBLIC NOTICE***
TAXES ARE NOT GOING UP 30%
Contrary to the Article released by The Courier Herald and the state notice of a 30% tax increase in Laurens County, this is misleading. The board of Commissioners have approved a Millage Rate increase in the amount of 30% but that will not directly reflect a 30% increase in your property taxes. Laurens County has consistently year of year boasted a low Millage Rate and will continue to do so. Our Current Millage rate of 5.48 NO LONGER Sustains the expenditures of Laurens County. The need to increase the Millage rate is for Public Safety, no addition to Administration or Public Works. This increase will directly fund the Sheriff’s Needs, Laurens County EMS, Rural Fire and 911. The Proposed 7.00 Millage Rate will still be one of the lowest in the state and much lower than all surrounding counties. The Board of Commissioners works very hard to control spending and be frugal of all taxpayers dollars.
WHAT DOES THIS INCREASE MEAN FOR PROPERTY OWNERS?
If you own a home that is assessed at $200,000 (which is the county average) your taxes will increase approximately $10 per month ($120 per year) If you have any questions please feel free to contact any five of us at any time. Also, Public Hearings for this is scheduled for:

9/22 @ 6PM With Commissioner Meeting to follow at 6:30pm

Good Afternoon Everyone! We’ve already had several wrecks this morning. Please stay off the roads unless you absolutely have to be out! Also all County Collection Centers will be CLOSED today. They will re-open Tuesday Morning at 7AM.

Hey everyone, this is Gerad Mathis, your District 3 County Commissioner. We’re starting to see some bigger snowflakes falling, and I just want to remind you to be careful if you need to be out and about. Some roads may be slick in spots, if you do have to get out, please take your time and don’t rush.

We’re keeping a close eye on road conditions, and if you see any problem areas or hazards, feel free to reach out and let us know. Last night myself and Sheriff Larry Dean had the privilege of Visiting West Fraser in Dudley along with the Laurens County Fire Dept District 1 Firefighters.
We have a yearly walkthrough of the plant to ensure familiarity with all First Responders in the event of an emergency. West Fraser is a state of the art Lumber Mill processing over 150 truck loads of raw timber daily. They are vital to our local economy and play a major role in the US Lumber Market. Laurens County is lucky to have them located in our community. Thankyou Again West Frasier for having us!

I Always enjoy the Month of March in Laurens County! Last week myself and fellow Commissioner Jimmy Rogers led the Dudley Little League Parade, driving a fire truck and Carrying the 2024 District Champions.
This morning I was honored to be able to march in the 2025 St. Patrick’s Parade with the Laurens County Fire Honorguard with which I’ve been a member of since its inception in 2005. I love our community and enjoy being active in it.
