COMMUNITY NOTICE – STORM RECOVERY & SOLICITORS

Following today’s hail storm, the City of Dublin would like to remind residents to use caution when hiring contractors for storm repairs. Historically, severe weather events bring an influx of out-of-town roofing, construction, and repair companies into the area. While many are legitimate businesses, unfortunately scams and fraudulent contractors are also common after storms.

Please take the following precautions before hiring anyone:
Do not feel pressured into signing a contract immediately.

Do not pay large amounts of money upfront before work is completed.

Never pay in full before repairs are finished.

Be cautious of anyone demanding cash-only payments.

Verify the company is insured and reputable.

Ask for references and check online reviews.

Read all paperwork carefully before signing.

Never allow anyone to inspect your roof or property without your permission.

Contact your insurance company before agreeing to repairs.

The City of Dublin would also like to remind residents and businesses that anyone going door-to-door soliciting business within the city limits is required to first obtain a Solicitor’s Permit from Dublin City Hall.

Residents are encouraged to ask to see a solicitor’s permit before conducting business with anyone going door-to-door. Businesses operating without the required permit may be subject to enforcement action.

If you have concerns about suspicious activity, aggressive solicitors, or potential scams, please contact the Dublin Police Department.

Stay safe, Dublin.

This week we recognize the unseen lifeline behind every emergency call—the dispatchers of Erath County Dispatch.

Though they are not physically in our building, they are with us on every call, every traffic stop, and every emergency. Their voice is often the first contact and the steady presence guiding responders through critical moments.

The Dublin Police Department thanks you for everything you do.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – PHONE NUMBER SPOOFING 🚨

The City of Dublin has been made aware of a scam where someone is spoofing the City’s phone number and calling residents.

The caller is telling people that they missed a court summons and must call a 1-800 number to pay money.

⚠️ THIS IS A SCAM.

Please remember:

• The City of Dublin will NEVER call you and demand money for a court summons.
• Government agencies do not collect fines over the phone.
• We will never ask for payment through Cash App, gift cards, or other payment apps.
• If you actually have a court matter, you will receive official paperwork through the proper legal process, not a phone call demanding payment.

If you receive one of these calls:
✔ Hang up immediately.
✔ Do not call the number back.
✔ Do not provide personal or financial information.

FRAUD FRIDAY: Romance Scams

Romance scams continue to be one of the most financially and emotionally devastating scams we see. These criminals are patient, professional, and highly manipulative.

They are not just stealing money — they are exploiting trust.

How Romance Scams Work
#1. They Make Contact
Scammers reach out on:
Facebook
Instagram
TikTok
Dating apps
Text message or email

They often claim to be:
Military deployed overseas
An oil rig worker
An engineer working internationally
A wealthy investor
A widowed professional

#2.They Build Emotional Trust
They message daily.
They call you “baby” or “love” quickly.
They may even send flowers or gifts.

They work to isolate you from friends and family who might question the relationship.

#3. They Create a Crisis
After weeks or months, the emergency appears:

“My bank account is frozen.”
“I need money for a plane ticket.”
“I need help paying customs fees.”
“I have a medical emergency.”
“I need you to invest in crypto with me.”

#4. They Ask for Money in Hard-to-Trace Ways

Gift cards
Wire transfers
Cryptocurrency
Cash apps
Bank transfers

Once the money is sent — it is almost impossible to recover.

Red Flags to Watch For:
They refuse to video chat live.
They claim they cannot meet because they are overseas.
Their photos look professional or too perfect.
They quickly profess love.
They ask you to move conversations off the app.
They ask for financial help.

If someone you’ve never met in person is asking you for money — it is almost always a scam.

How to Protect Yourself
Never send money, gift cards, or crypto to someone you haven’t met in person.
Do not share personal or financial information.
Reverse image search profile pictures.
Talk to a trusted friend or family member before sending money.
Be cautious of anyone who creates urgency or secrecy.

If You Think You’ve Been Targeted

Stop communication immediately.
Do NOT send more money.
Report the profile on the platform.
Contact your bank immediately if money was sent.
File a report with local law enforcement.
