Today’s ruling from the Supreme Court of Virginia regarding the voter-approved redistricting referendum has sparked strong reactions across the Commonwealth. In a narrow 4–3 decision, the Court invalidated the referendum based on procedural concerns, despite millions of Virginians participating in the democratic process.
In a powerful dissent, Chief Justice Cleo Powell warned against disregarding the voice of Virginia voters after they had already spoken at the ballot box. Her opinion underscored something many Virginians believe deeply — our democracy works best when every vote is respected and every voice matters.
While many people are disappointed by today’s decision, this moment should not discourage us. It should motivate us.
This is our reminder that progress never happens by accident. It happens when people step up, stay engaged, and work together for change.
And right now, we have real momentum.
As we head toward the August 4 primary, strong Democratic candidates are stepping forward to challenge Morgan Griffith and fight for the future of Southwest Virginia. These candidates are talking about the issues that matter most to working families — affordable healthcare, stronger schools, economic opportunity, infrastructure, and protecting our democratic institutions.
Now is the time to get involved.
Learn about the candidates. Attend local events. Ask questions. Volunteer your time. Talk with your neighbors. Most importantly — make a plan to vote.
After the primary, we must come together as one united team focused on moving Southwest Virginia forward. If we stay energized, organized, and engaged, we can build the coalition needed to compete and win.
But none of this happens without you.
We need volunteers to knock doors, make calls, attend meetings, help organize events, support local candidates, and strengthen our communities from the ground up. Whether you can give a few hours or take on a larger role, your involvement matters.
This is how change happens — together.
