This little bobblehead accompanied Fr. William Menster on his trek to Antarctica. Fr. Menster was born in Cascade, IA in 1913. He attended Loras College and St. Mary's Seminary in Ohio and was ordained in 1938. Shortly after, he joined the Naval Reserves and in 1946 he was assigned to Operation Highjump – Admiral Richard Byrd's fourth expedition to Antarctica. When his ship, USS Mt. Olympus, docked, Fr. Menster became the 1st Catholic priest to set foot on Antarctica and shortly thereafter, led the 1st religious service on the continent. After serving in multiple parishes in the Archdiocese of Dubuque, he retired to Dubuque and passed away in 2007 at the age of 94. You can read all about his trip in his memoir, Strong Men South, which you can check out from the Loras College Library https://loras.on.worldcat.org/oclc/26493600.

In addition to this penguin, the CDH is home to Fr. Menster's papers and memorabilia.

In celebration of National Critical Infrastructure Protection Month, we wanted to look through some catalogs and find interesting and exciting photos of bridges and railroads that help build the landscape and area of Dubuque as we know it. As well as some of the city landscape, as we see the growth of the city in these photos, we have one of early Dubuque in 1870, a drawing by Alex Simplot. With out these early developments, we could not imagine the impact of this in our daily lives today.

It has taken many volunteer hours to inventory and rehouse the artifacts in the John Fox Memorabilia collection to prepare for tonight's event. The mess has been worth it to be able to share the items with everyone this evening!

Join us tonight at 7:00 pm in the Miller Academic Resource Center to check out this awesome collection.
