Lead hazards are not always easy to spot. In homes built before 1978, lead based paint may be found on windows, doors, trim, porches, stairs, railings, and other painted surfaces. As paint chips, peels, or wears from everyday use, lead dust may settle on floors, toys, and other places young children touch. Marshalltown’s Lead Hazard Reduction Grant helps eligible households identify and address lead hazards before they become a bigger concern. If your home was built before 1978 and a child under age 6 lives in the home, take the first step today. Complete the interest form at https://www.marshalltown-ia.gov/FormCenter/Housing-Community-Development-10/Lead-Program-Interest-Form-78 or call 641-754-6583 to learn more.

City of Dubuque is showing what can happen when Brownfields funding is used as a catalyst for community investment.

As part of U.S. EPA Heartland Region’s visit to eastern Iowa last week, the delegation traveled to City of Dubuque to see Brownfields redevelopment projects and hear from City staff, state representatives, developers, and business owners.
The results are impressive:

💰 Approximately $2 million in EPA Brownfields funding

➡️ Leveraged into more than $942 million in total reinvestment

The tour included the Historic Millwork District, North and South Port, Bee Branch and Comiskey Park, highlighting how Brownfields funding has supported environmental cleanup, infrastructure improvements, redevelopment and the revitalization of previously underutilized properties.

U.S. EPA Heartland Region also recognized the City of Dubuque for receiving a new $500,000 EPA Communitywide Assessment Grant and ECIA for receiving additional EPA Supplemental Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund funding.

Brownfields work is about much more than cleaning up a property. It is about creating opportunities for new investment, businesses, housing, jobs, and community improvements.

Thank you to U.S. EPA Heartland Region and Iowa Department of Natural Resources for visiting City of Dubuque Government and seeing firsthand the impact of these investments—and to all of the local partners who continue to turn challenging properties into opportunities.

This is what partnership looks like.
