On Saturday, August 29, 2026 the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office is teaming up with Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and other agencies across Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. Our efforts will be to enforce drunk driving related incidences to save lives. As always we encourage those to drink responsibility and to utilize Ride Share services when needed.

There is a current scam in which scammers are scraping information about arrested persons, likely from our P2C recent arrests, and demanding bond money from the arrested person’s family. Please pass the word, the Sheriff’s Office will never call you and demand bond money for inmates. Also, bonds paid at the Dubuque County Jail are only accepted in person and as cash. Anyone asking you to send money anywhere else is attempting to scam you. We do not accept gift cards, checks, bitcoin, etc. Thanks and stay safe.

Just a quick reminder for all area residents, RAGBRAI will be in our area beginning Friday. Expect travel delays in and around Dyersville tomorrow as riders come into town and potentially explore the area. On Saturday, the following roads in Dubuque County WILL experience significant travel delays , particularly for eastbound traffic: Dyersville East, Lansing, Black Hills or Kluesner (southbound), Prier, Holy Cross (southbound), and Old Highway.

It is recommended that you avoid these areas unless absolutely necessary, as there will be approximately 15,000-20,000 riders on those roads beginning approximately dawn through 6:00 PM. If you must utilize one of these roads for personal travel, please leave early for your destination and exercise patience. Please help us keep this a safe event for everyone involved!

SCAM ALERT!!!! SCAM ALERT!!!!!

Well in case you didn't know school is out and the summer jobs have opened up. With that comes new telemarketing jobs. These are the guys and gals that call random people to solicit money for bond. They will call you acting so nice and caring. Believe it or not they'll lie and say they are a Sergeant or other employee with the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office and tell you that your son, daughter, brother, cousin, nephew, iguana or even hamster has been arrested and that you need to post their bond in order to help them. They won't require cash bond to be posted because that is the only legal tender that is accepted in the courts. No they request Apple cards, visa gift cards etc. because its easy, simple and you can text them the numbers so that they can steal your money never to be seen again.

If you have made it this far you've caught some of the humor in the alert. There's nothing funny though about being scammed. We will not call and solicit money for bond. If your relative is arrested we will allow them to make the call and talk directly to you. This continues to be a scam that is used and unfortunately catches people off guard and in a position to want to help. Please, Please, Please do not send anyone money in this scenario.

Last but not least please pass this information to everyone you know, especially the elderly, who may not be as privy to social media.

DES MOINES, Iowa - As preparations get underway to celebrate America's 250th birthday, there's one essential step to planning the perfect party: making sure everyone gets a sober ride home. To encourage safe decision-making and help prevent impaired driving during the holiday festivities, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is partnering with local law enforcement for a high-visibility enforcement campaign July 2-6.

While most Iowans choose to celebrate safely, the Fourth of July has historically been one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. During last year’s holiday travel period (July 3–6, 2025), more than 520 crashes, including eight fatalities, were recorded across Iowa.

“We want people to enjoy the holiday and to celebrate responsibly,” says GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes. “Impaired driving endangers everyone, and our law enforcement partners will be out looking for impaired drivers and will not hesitate to stop them. If you’re going to drink, plan ahead and know how you're getting home safely.”

Having fun and getting home safely is a community effort. No matter how you choose to celebrate, make the safe choice to get a sober ride home by designating a sober driver, scheduling a taxi or rideshare, or using your community’s sober ride program when available.

To help Iowans plan ahead and celebrate safely, Doll Distributing is generously providing a $10 Uber voucher through the Decide To Ride program. The voucher is valid statewide from 5 p.m. on July 3 through 2 a.m. on July 6 and is limited to the first 1,000 redemptions.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force (CITSTF), and law enforcement across Iowa June 8-12, 2026, for the second annual statewide Move Over enforcement project. Expect to see extra law enforcement on the roads watching for violations and educating drivers about the importance of yielding to all vehicles on the shoulder displaying flashing lights.

While Iowa's Move-Over Law has been in effect since 2002, there have been numerous fatalities in Iowa and nationwide resulting from a driver not moving over. Whether it's emergency responders, Highway Helpers, tow operators, or a fellow motorist, everyone needs space to stay safe.

Iowa's Move Over Law requires motorists to change lanes or slow down if changing lanes is not possible when approaching a vehicle on the shoulder displaying flashing lights. This includes emergency vehicles, tow trucks, commercial trucks, and passenger vehicles with flashing lights or hazard lights illuminated.

Penalties for violating this law (Iowa Code 321.323A/Iowa Code 321.324) include a fine of $210.25 and can include suspension of driver's license privileges ranging from 90 days to one year in cases of property damage, bodily injury, or death.

If you see flashing lights on the side of the road, it doesn't matter the color- Move over. By enforcing this law, CITSTF and GTSB hope to save lives and increase safety on Iowa roads.

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with law enforcement across Iowa to support the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Click It or Ticket high-visibility enforcement effort. This seatbelt-focused enforcement campaign will run from May 18-31, 2026.

Seatbelts remain the single best defense against serious injury, and while most Iowans take safety seriously, even one unbuckled fatality is too many. In 2025, 121 people who died in Iowa traffic crashes were not wearing a seatbelt. These unrestrained occupants accounted for 47% of all 2025 traffic fatalities, a tragic number that is entirely preventable.

“No matter the type of vehicle you’re traveling in, where you’re seated, or what type of road you’re driving on, the best way to protect yourself in a crash is to buckle up,” says Brett Tjepkes, Iowa GTSB Bureau Chief. “If this enforcement effort helps people to change their habits and start buckling up consistently, we’ll consider the mission a success.”

All it takes is one click and a few seconds to protect yourself and your loved ones every time you get in the car. Make safety a habit by buckling up in every seat, every time.
