UPDATE: 8:30 a.m., April 12 - Dispatch was notified this morning that this issue has been fully resolved.

ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT : An accidental, construction-related fiber optic line cut is affecting phone service for both landlines and some mobile carriers in the Dubuque area this afternoon.

If you need to call 9-1-1 or non-emergency dispatch (563-589-4415) and your phone service is impacted by this issue, it is recommended to continue trying 9-1-1 even if your initial call does not go through. Another option is to try using a different phone, if possible. If your carrier supports the text to 9-1-1 feature, that is also an option to connect with 9-1-1 until the fiber line is repaired.

DES MOINES, Iowa - April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and itโ€™s time to turn awareness into action. The Governorโ€™s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB) is partnering with the Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force (CITSTF), and law enforcement across the state April 6-10 to enforce Iowa's Hands-Free Driving Law. The goal of this project is to educate drivers about the importance of driving distraction-free and to help drivers comply with the law going forward. This project coincides with the national distracted driving enforcement wave occurring from April 6-13.

Iowa's Hands-Free Driving Law went into effect with a warning period on July 1, 2025, and citations began being issued by law enforcement on January 1, 2026. Since January 1, 2026, over 2,400 citations and over 1,900 warnings have been issued. The law prohibits the use of electronic devices beyond a single touch while driving unless they are used in a hands-free mode. The passing of this law is a key factor that contributed to the historic low number of traffic fatalities recorded in 2025.

With so many ways to go hands-free, there's a solution for every device and every vehicle. Some of the options to go hands-free include using voice commands, speaker phone, AUX cords, Bluetooth, or phone mounts.

Now a moving violation in Iowa, penalties for violating this law (Iowa Code 321.276) include a fine of $170. By enforcing this law and bringing awareness to the dangers of distracted driving, we hope to save lives and increase safety on Iowa roads.

The following skis were left behind at Sundown Mountain on March 7th. It is believed that someone may have grabbed the same make and model of ski but just different length. We are asking everyone to check their skis to verify that they are the correct size. The skis that were taken were either a 140 or 142 in length and these 138 were left behind. It is believed that this was a complete mistake in just grabbing the wrong identical pair of skis outside of the length. If this was you, please contact our office so that we can make the exchange and get each pair back to the rightful owner.

To all area residents: In November, a firearm was located on Balltown Road and turned in to the Sheriff's Office. Efforts to find the owner have been unsuccessful. If you lost a firearm in that area a couple months ago and can provide identifying make, model, and serial number of the missing weapon (which must match the same information on the found weapon), please feel free to reach out to Investigator Jill Bellmann at 563-582-1648. Thanks, and stay safe!
