PSA: Lightning Safety Tips

Outdoor Safety Rules
Seek immediate shelter:
Move to a sturdy building with electricity and plumbing, or an enclosed hard-top car with windows up.

Avoid open areas:
Stay away from water, tall or isolated trees, high ground, and metal objects like fences.

The 30-minute rule:
Wait at least 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder before resuming outdoor activities.

If trapped outside:
Squat low on the balls of your feet with your head down and hands over your ears, making yourself as small a target as possible.

Never lie flat on the ground.

Indoor Safety Rules
Avoid plumbing:
Do not take a shower, bathe, wash dishes, or run tap water, as lightning can travel through pipes.

Disconnect electronics:
Unplug computers, TVs, and appliances.

Avoid using anything connected to an electrical outlet or corded phone.

Stay away from openings:
Keep clear of windows, doors, porches, and concrete floors or walls

PSA: Turn Around Don't Drown

Why Flood Waters Are Dangerous
Shallow water risks:
Just 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock over an adult and reach the bottom of most passenger cars, causing loss of control.

Vehicle displacement:
It takes only 12 inches of rushing water to carry away most cars, and just 2 feet of water can sweep away SUVs and trucks.

Hidden hazards:
Flooded roads may hide deep holes, washed-out pavement, sharp metal, electrical wires, or chemical waste.

Safety Rules
Never bypass barriers:
Do not drive around road barriers or warning signs.

Abandon stalled cars:
If your car stalls in rising water, leave it immediately and move to higher ground if it is safe to do so.

Avoid walking:
Do not try to walk through moving flood currents.

PSA: Pull to the right for sirens and lights

When you see flashing lights or hear sirens, you must immediately and safely pull over to the right-hand edge or curb of the road and come to a complete stop.

What to Do

Pull right:
Signal and steer your vehicle toward the right curb or edge of the road.

Stop completely:
Remain stopped until all emergency vehicles have passed you.

Check for more:
Watch carefully, as multiple emergency vehicles often travel together.

At intersections:
Stay put if you are stopped at a red light so the vehicle can navigate around you; do not enter the intersection

What NOT to Do

Don't pull left:
Never move to the left lane or the center median.

Don't stop in the middle:
Avoid freezing or stopping in active travel lanes.

Don't race:
Never attempt to outrun an emergency vehicle
