A huge thank you to the SPCA, Outer Banks Community Foundation, and Ocean Atlantic Rentals for their generous donation of new “PAWmergency” kits. These kits will help provide care to animals when they need it most. We are grateful for community partnerships that help us better serve both our community and our four-legged friends!

Congratulations to Chief Dudek, MFF Quinn, and MFF Brock on receiving the Mighty Duck award this quarter! 👏

At the May Town Council Meeting, the Town of Duck announced that Fire Chief Dudek, Master Firefighter Quinn and Master Firefighter Brock have been awarded as first quarter Mighty Ducks (an award given to a staff member nominated by their peers for demonstrating Town staff's core values: Service, Ownership, Accountability, and Respect (SOAR).

Each of these individuals play an important role within the Duck Fire Department and the community, and together they demonstrate how strong teamwork creates an impact greater than any one person working alone. Their collaboration was recently on full display when they quickly stepped in to assist a distressed hauler with smoking brakes outside the Public Safety building. Without hesitation, they worked together to ensure the situation was handled safely, providing reassurance to the driver and managing the scene until the brakes were able to cool so the driver could continue on safely. Their professionalism, quick thinking, and compassion reflect the highest standards of service and care for the public.

This kind of attentiveness and commitment to others is what makes Duck such a special community. Through their teamwork and dedication, Chief Dudek, Master Firefighter Quinn, and Master Firefighter Brock exemplify our SOAR values and make a lasting, positive impact.

Please join us in congratulating them on this well-earned recognition!

PAT Week is here!
All staff are required to complete our annual Physical Ability Test.
The test includes donning PPE, a 100’ drag of 5” supply line, a 100’ drag of charged 1 3/4” hose, throwing a 24’ ground ladder to the roof, forcible entry, masking up, conducting a search, breaching a reduced profile, and a 50’ dummy drag.
Here’s Chief Dudek getting it done! 🔥

The Town would like to share an update on the Public Safety Building following discussions at the Annual Retreat in February, where Mayor Thibodeau explained that the draft lease with the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) originally included a cash payment. However, the approved USACE lease framework only allows for an “in-kind” exchange (services or goods instead of money). Under North Carolina law, the Town is not allowed to enter into this type of agreement.

Since then, the Town has reached out to upper- level federal leadership and recently received a response from the USACE. Federal officials understand the Town’s situation and agree on the importance of maintaining public safety services. They also recognize that an in-kind agreement will not work and are now considering a 50- year standard lease option instead.

To keep the community informed, we have created a dedicated website with updates about the Public Safety Building. The site includes a project timeline, background information, and an FAQ section.

This issue affects more than just the Town of Duck. The Public Safety Building plays an important role in emergency response services for both Currituck and Dare counties, making it a regional priority.

The Town remains committed to working to ensure there is no interruption to public safety services and appreciates the community’s support.
