We were invited and attended Larry Dalrymple an author of a book called, Their Heritage, Their Heritage, Their Traditions-The resilience of Native American Basket Artist. In the book which had a diverse of native basket weavers through out the U.S.In the Jicarilla Apache section, were featured 3 Jicarilla basket weavers, Lydia Pesata, Loretta Romero and Rowena Mora

Larry Spoke about his passion of collecting and researching Native American Indian baskets. Larry also mentioned that the Jicarilla Apache Nation is the only one of its kind, cultural arts center in the United States that has kept our basket weaving alive and continually passing it down to the next generation. We have local Jicarilla permanent employees who produce basket weaving, beadwork, moccasins making, pottery and many more cultural arts at our center.

The Jicarilla Cultural Arts and Heritage Center displayed samples of our Jicarilla Baskets from our museum collections.

Thank you Larry and your colleagues for Inviting us to this event.

"Jicarilla Apache Day", Feb.11th, is celebrated on the Jicarilla Apache Nation and is considered a tribal holiday. Today the Jicarilla Cultural Arts and Heritage Center fed a traditional meal to the community. We had Apache meat, vegetable and potatoes stew, green Chile posole stew, coffee, Indian tea and hot frybread. Unannounced to the community we gave our Jicarilla Elders blankets. They were very surprised and appreciative for their gifts. This year we had a warm tent for our guest to eat it. Many elders came and visited one another. We also had and elder sing round dance songs for the crowd. Special thanks goes out to the Jicarilla Cultural Affairs staff and our Cultural Arts staff for the frybread Jicarilla Tribal service, Any Event Rental, Kathy James and the Community Service Program, David Werito, Raynard Faber, and especially our cook Horacio Cordova. Today the Jicarilla Culture Arts and Heritage Center visits the Great Sand Dunes. We did a cultural arts presentation to Dulce and the San Luis Valley schools. This area has significant cultural meaning to the Jicarilla Apache and was once our traditional aboriginal territory. This was also the beginning of filming for the PBS documentary of the Jicarilla Apache Nation.
