St. Louis County Historical Society

St. Louis County Historical Society Since 1922, we have been dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of St. Louis County, Minnesota. https://linktr.ee/slchs

Our mission is to collect, preserve, and interpret the stories, artifacts, and documents that define our unique heritage. The Society introduces visitors to the St. Louis County Heritage & Arts Center, better known as the Depot, our home since 1976, to the region's roots by presenting the stories of exploration, immigration, and development, in our exhibits. Just a portion of the Society's efforts

are represented by these exhibits. We hold in public trust thousands of museum objects and tens of thousands of archival records, which can be accessed at the Northeast Minnesota Historical Center, at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

On this day, 106 years ago, three Black men—Elias Clayton, Elmer Jackson, and Isaac McGhie—were lynched in downtown Duluth.

Each year on June 15, the community gathers at the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial plaza for a time of solemn remembrance, reflection, and a commitment to racial justice.

To learn more about this history, we have shared an article featuring both primary and secondary sources in the comments below.

We had a question about the source of the granite used to construct the St. Louis County Jail, designed by Holstead & Sullivan and added in 1923 to the Civic Center. The Duluth News Tribune (11/29/1922) reported that the county commissioners stipulated that the contractor, Jacobsen Brothers, procure the granite from the quarries of John Clark of Rockville (which is near St. Cloud). In constructing city hall, there was much debate about building in limestone or granite (more expensive).🏛️
