Help shape the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness’ cancellation policy. We’re proposing a modified, user‑focused refund schedule that rewards canceling early so others can go. The draft was developed with input from the BWCAW Collaborative and is now out for public comment through July 22. ➡ Read the proposal and comment: https://www.fs.usda.gov/r09/superior/newsroom/releases

Ticks can be as small as a poppy seed. There are five ticks in this photo. Can you spot them?

Steps to protect against ticks:
1. Dress in light-colored long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks.
2. Apply EPA-approved repellent (like DEET or picaridin) to skin and treat clothing with permethrin.
3. Always walk in the center of trails, and shower and do a full-body check as soon
as you get home.

Isolated strong storms are possible across parts of the region Friday. The main timing for these storms will be from the early afternoon into the evening. While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few strong (non-severe) storms could produce small hail up to penny-sized (0.75") and gusty winds up to 40-50 mph.

Whether you are camping, boating, or have outdoor plans, please stay weather-aware and have a plan for safe shelter. Make sure you have a reliable way to receive warning information both at home and outdoors! Stay updated at weather.gov/duluth.

Thank you to the 20 members of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and organizer Timo Rova for brushing and clearing the St Louis River Hunter Walking Trail, located on the Laurentian Ranger District. In addition to that group, current and retired staff from the Superior National Forest and the Minnesota Fish & Wildlife also helped trail clearing.

The hunter walking trail was developed by former Laurentian Wildlife Biologist Dan Ryan, who worked with timber, silviculture, and recreation staff to enhance local wildlife habitat and hunting opportunities through active management using diverse, small timber sales. Once those projects were completed, the trail was built in cooperation with Ruffed Grouse Society & American Woodcock Society in the 1990s. https://www.fs.usda.gov/r09/superior/recreation/trails/st-louis-river-hunter-walking-trail
