First Witness Child Advocacy Center

First Witness Child Advocacy Center We Stand With Kids We are a 501 c 3 non-profit located in the heart of Duluth, Minnesota. Those involved with the process saw the need for change.

First Witness Child Advocacy Center is a safe, child-friendly place for victims of child sexual and physical abuse to tell their story. We provide child appropriate forensic interviews, crisis counseling to children and families and age appropriate education on personal body safety for children. We also provide forensic interview training to social workers, law enforcement officials, county attorn

eys and others who work with children or investigate child abuse allegations. At First Witness we believe every child deserves ongoing safety and opportunities to heal from abuse. First Witness is a nationally accredited child advocacy center working as part of a multidisciplinary team made up of public and private agencies involved with the investigation, prosecution, medical examination and advocacy services for children and their non-offending caregivers. Prior to First Witness, children were likely to be interviewed 3-4 times throughout the investigation. Our team protocol requires just one record, child-centered interview at the First Witness building in Duluth. Our goal is to make sure children are safe. Our Services Include: Evaluation and Assessment, Family Services, Prevention & Training.

First Witness Announces Executive Director Leadership Transition - Executive Director Tracie Clanaugh will retire in March 2027, following more than nine years of transformative leadership.

Clanaugh joined First Witness as Executive Director in 2018 and guided significant growth across the organization. She strengthened programs and community partnerships, expanded prevention and specialized training efforts, and built the organization's capacity to serve more children, families, and professionals.

“Thirty-five years ago, our community made a commitment to children; it has been an honor to carry that commitment forward,” Clanaugh said. “My work with the First Witness staff has deeply humbled me. Their wisdom, expertise, and tireless commitment to our mission leave me honored to work alongside them each day. The First Witness Board of Directors and our Multidisciplinary Teams represent a beacon of hope in our community — a group of committed individuals dedicated to changing our world and working to end child abuse, our nation’s largest social problem.”

Following a comprehensive process, the Board has selected Associate Director Tyra Jaramillo-Kraemer as the organization's next Executive Director. With seven years of dedicated service to First Witness, Jaramillo-Kraemer brings deep knowledge of its programs and operations, strong relationships with regional partners, and a steadfast commitment to its child-centered mission. Clanaugh and Jaramillo-Kraemer will work closely with staff and the Board in the coming months to ensure continuity and a seamless leadership transition.

Here at First Witness, we offer a Cultural and Spiritual Center within our building to serve the best interest of children and families in a way that supports their own healing and makes them feel safe and comfortable. It is our priority to support their safety and mental health needs, while also considering the importance of spiritual and cultural connections for folks when healing.

We have expanded our connections in the community by adding a Spiritual Care Provider, Kathy Nelson (pictured in the 3rd photo), to work with caregivers and a Family Advocate to process emotions through a trauma-informed and spiritual lens, tailored to the caregivers needs.

Our forensic interviewers, Megan and Amber are spending the week all the way down in New Orleans, Louisiana at the APSAC Colliquium! Megan will be presenting her presentation titled "Drawn to the Facts: Utilizing Drawings in Forensic Interviews" which discusses how to use drawings during forensic interviews and the research behind how using them can help provide more information to the team during a forensic interview.

We are thrilled to be presenting at such an amazing conference and hoping to make some great connections! 😊
