On March 25, 1985, a star was born. ⭐️

A group of community-minded citizens came together to receive and distribute charitable funds to improve the quality of life throughout Gwinnett County. Years later, this partnership became the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia!

But this group wasn't the only star shining. The 57th Academy Awards were also held that day!! 🎥

🏆 Can you guess which movie won Best Picture that year?

Fundholder Friday | Hebron Christian Academy 📚

Earlier this spring, our Fundholder Experience Manager, Lynn, had the opportunity to visit with James Taylor at Hebron Christian Academy and even sit in on a middle school shop class. It was such an incredible experience!

Students are not only receiving a high-quality education, but also growing in their faith and learning what it means to live it out daily.

She was especially blown away to see how they’re preparing future pilots. The school has invested in a flight simulator where students are learning to fly and even working toward their pilot’s license. Truly amazing to see this level of innovation in education!

Join us in welcoming our new fundholder, Senior Services North Fulton!

Senior Services North Fulton serves through many programs, including Meals on Wheels, Meals on Wheels for Pets, Transitional Housing, Transportation (TOPS), Senior Centers and Care Management.

Their care isn't just helping seniors age with agency and dignity. It can be life-saving!

"One TOPS client, Mr. Thrift, a veteran, was diagnosed with cancer and needed chemotherapy and radiation treatments three times a week for two months," shared Executive Director Cathy Pope.

"Through TOPS transportation services and our rideshare partnerships, we ensured he made every appointment. At his most recent appointment, he learned he is now in remission and told our team, 'TOPS saved my life.'

"Without transportation, he had no way to access treatment."

But with Senior Services North Fulton, this veteran was given the support he needed to win his fight with cancer.

Through their fund with the Community Foundation, Senior Services North Fulton will expand its ability to serve, not only in the present but for years to come. We're thrilled to partner with Cathy and her team as they transform senior care in our community!

In a state that ranks 50th in the nation for state funding of the arts, Atlanta Music Project (AMP) is creating opportunities that never existed in Atlanta before. But the program also faces the reality that tuition-free music education is not a self-sustaining endeavor. It relies solely on fundraising to remain operational.

One recent avenue AMP has started using is an agency fund through the Community Foundation for Northeast Georgia (CFNEG).

AMP’s agency fund was started by Susan Nickerson in honor of her late sister, Jayne Nickerson Gocken. Before she died in 2011, Jayne had served on AMP’s board of directors and loved playing cello. Susan said the fund was to honor Jayne’s passions and bring music to others.

“[Music] really fed her soul,” Susan said. “All the grants and special programs in the world won't help if the entity is not around to do it.”

Susan, whose donor advised fund through CFNEG allowed her to create this fund for AMP with a modest investment, said it provides the program with the latitude it needs to make decisions.

“With an agency fund, they can use it at will, as their individual boards determine,” she said. "The flexibility and availability on a more immediate basis are extremely attractive for me to be able to empower them.”

When seventh-grader Spencer Branch picked up a trombone for the first time, he unlocked his future.

Six years later, the young man from South Atlanta was headed to Hampton University in Virginia on a full scholarship to play in the school’s marching band.

He cultivated his talent for the trombone through the nonprofit Atlanta Music Project (AMP), a music education program based in the heart of Atlanta’s Capitol View neighborhood. There, he took lessons, practiced and performed under the guidance of professional music educators at no cost.

AMP’s co-founder and CEO, Dantes Rameau, said Spencer represents so many of the kids who come through his organization’s doors and find music as a way to open options for their future.

“He was never going to take it pro,” Dantes said. “He loved design and got accepted to Hampton University to study architecture. But Spencer figured out a way to use music to pay for college.”
