On this day, 125 years ago, residents of our town voted in a referendum to decide to leave Palisades Township and incorporate as the Borough of Schraalenburgh New Jersey. Out of approximately 400 eligible voters, 101 votes were cast and 65 voted in favor. The next day, Friday, July 20, 1894 the election results were sent to the court and the Borough of Schraalenburgh was incorporated. The name was changed in 1898 in honor of it’s first Mayor, Dumont Clarke.

Dumont is holding a short ceremony at Memorial Park tomorrow, Saturday July 20, at 9:00am to commemorate the 125th anniversary of our town. All are welcome to attend. More events will take place on Dumont Day in September and in the fall.

CAMP MERRITT was situated ten miles northwest of New York City, on a ridge midway between the towns of Cresskill and Dumont, Bergen County, New Jersey. It occupied an area of 770 acres, 580 acres of which were occupied by the camp proper. The remaining 190 acres were taken up by warehouses, railway areas, an athletic field, and a truck garden of some 60 acres which produced a large quantity of garden truck for the various messes. The camp was one mile long and three-quarters of a mile wide.
