KISRA KISRA is a faith-motivated, non-profit organization that strengthens West Virginians through Health, Employment, Asset Development and Learning programs.

Supporting families from every walk of life in our community. It all started with the desire to help children. It grew to become a comprehensive offering of programs benefiting people from every walk of life in several West Virginia counties. Our very first program was the Harambee Learning Center, in our Education division. The center provided area kids with an after-school program that offered h

elp with homework, mentoring, recreational activities and more. We quickly realized that many of the children faced risk factors including academic failure, extreme economic deprivation and exposure to alcohol and drugs. It was apparent that our community needed additional services to strengthen families. We quickly developed our Employment and Economic Empowerment divisions and the programs within them. We worked with TANF (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) recipients, offering them workforce readiness training and job placement assistance. We also reached out to other low- and moderate-income residents, offering them financial counseling because many of them had credit problems. We saw that residents needed childcare, so we opened the Harambee Child Development Center, which created more jobs in an economically deprived community. We started helping them become more financially self sufficient through KISRA Works! Because so many of these families were headed by single mothers, we began helping men become better fathers and providers through our Pathways to Responsible Fatherhood Initiative. And because the majority of that program’s participants had criminal backgrounds, we established our Second Chance Mentoring Program. Finally, we saw that our mental health facilities were overcrowded. We created our Behavioral Health division and began befriending and supporting mental health patients so that they could remain at home. And because children get the best head start when they come into the world wanted, we opened the KISRA Family Planning Clinic in 2011. It’s been a joy, a learning experience and an evolution. From one after-school program and a desire to help kids came a comprehensive approach to answering the most urgent needs in our community.

💙✨ HOPE BEHIND THE WALLS–WV ✨💙

We wanted to take a moment to share our updated flyer and a little more about who we are and why we do this work.

Hope Behind The Walls–WV was created to support those impacted by incarceration and the families who often carry the weight alongside them. We believe people are more than the worst moment of their lives, and that healing, accountability, growth, and second chances matter.

Our mission is rooted in compassion, advocacy, and hope — especially for those who feel forgotten or alone. Whether someone is incarcerated, returning home, or supporting a loved one through the journey, we want them to know there are people who care.

Some of the ways we try to help include:
• Parole packet guidance
• Advocacy and reform efforts
• Encouragement and emotional support
• Reentry assistance and resources
• Personal growth and second chance support

We are still growing, learning, and building connections every day, but we are committed to standing beside our community and being a voice for humanity and reform in West Virginia.

If you or your loved one needs support, or if you would like to connect, volunteer, collaborate, or learn more, please feel free to reach out.

“No one should be defined only by their past. Hope can still grow in hard places.” 💛

💌 DON’T THROW AWAY OLD GREETING CARDS… GIVE THEM A SECOND PURPOSE 💌

Something as simple as a card can mean everything to someone who feels forgotten.

At Hope Behind The Walls-WV, we are collecting new or gently used greeting cards for ALL occasions to send into facilities across West Virginia — reminding those inside that they are still seen, still valued, and still loved. 💙

✨ A birthday card
✨ A “thinking of you” note
✨ A simple message of encouragement

These small acts of kindness can bring real hope into very hard places.

📬 How to help: Send your card donations to:

💡 Even if you only have a few cards to give — it matters.
💡 Even one card can remind someone they are not alone.

Let’s come together and show that compassion doesn’t stop at prison walls.

💐 Mother’s Day Looks Different… But Love Still Shows Up 💐

Mother’s Day can be incredibly hard when a mother is incarcerated.
But love doesn’t stop at walls, and neither does her role as Mom.

If you have a mother, or the mother of your children, who is incarcerated—here are meaningful ways to remind her she is still loved, still needed, and still Mom 💗

💌 Write Her Something Real
Not just “Happy Mother’s Day”—tell her what she means to you.
Share memories, appreciation, and remind her she’s still a big part of your life.

👩‍👧‍👦 Let the Kids Be Part of It
Have them draw pictures, write letters, or share little updates.
Even the smallest note can mean everything to her.

📸 Send Moments From Home
Photos, school updates, funny stories—let her feel included in everyday life.
She shouldn’t feel like she’s missing everything.

🎉 Celebrate Her On Purpose
Send a card, coordinate letters from family, or make sure she hears from you.
She deserves to be recognized just like any other mom.

💭 Speak Life Into Her
Remind her she’s still strong, still loved, still worthy.
Motherhood doesn’t disappear because of where she is.

📦 Send Something Thoughtful (if allowed)
A small package, a book, or something comforting.
Even simple things can carry a lot of love.

🌱 Remind Her There’s Still a Future
Talk about the kids, future plans, and the life waiting for her.
Give her something to hold onto.

💗 Most of All… Don’t Let Her Feel Forgotten
Consistency matters more than anything.
A message, a letter, a call—it all says: “You still matter. We still need you.”

There are so many mothers sitting in cells this Mother’s Day wondering if anyone is thinking about them…

Let’s make sure they know they are 💗
