Today, in Mayor Elliott’s office, we swore in our newest Probationary Firefighter, Zachary Thompson. Chief Burger pinned his badge on him and presented him with his Probationary helmet shield. Congratulations Zach, we’re glad to have you on board!

In this post, I spoke about our new DIB boat. We would like to thank Walter Hall WV House Of Delegate District 58 and Mark Hunt for WV Auditor for their assistance with the LEDA (Local Economic Development Act) Community Grants program in helping us obtain the funding for this unit. Our old boat, would not have been able to have been used on this response, so we are definitely grateful for their help. The LEDA program definitely could have saved a few lives on this response!

On Sunday, at 4:42 pm, Dunbar FD was dispatched for water rushing into a residence from the terrible storms that hit the Kanawha Valley. Our new DIB boat came in handy today and the A Shift crew was able to rescue the woman out of her house (which on our arrival had about 18 inches of water in it) along with 4 dogs. Great job fellas!!

Today we’d like to congratulate C-Shift Assistant Chief Billy James on 20 years at Dunbar Fire Department. Billy is also our Arson Investigator along with our resident mechanic and fixer of everything. Congratulations Billy, thank you for everything you do around here and your service to the citizens of Dunbar!

This afternoon, you may have seen Truck-561 set up behind the old Kroger as it was time for the annual aerial ladder testing. This has to be completed on an annual basis to ensure that the ladder is safe for use and climbing. As we expected, the ladder passed with no problems at all

As many of you know, DFD responded to a structure fire at Los Agaves on Saturday. Dunbar Fire Department ladder truck 561 was the first fire apparatus on scene and within 5 minutes of arriving, we had the ladder set up to the roof, flowing water and the majority of the fire knocked down. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. We’d like to thank South Charleston Fire Department and Charleston Fire Department for their assistance and also Mike Hoffman for catching the plug for us! Great job everyone!

Dunbar FD would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy 4th of July weekend. Make sure to limit your time in the heat, drink plenty of fluids, and be careful with your fireworks. Don’t let this be the last weekend you have with all 10 of your fingers! Happy Birthday America!

This morning, DFD & DPD were dispatched for 2 baby kittens stuck underneath of a house inside some cinderblocks. Thanks to the teamwork of Code Enforcement Officer Sergent, DPD Lt Kendall, Cpl Thompson, and DFD Asst Chief Bowers, Lt Dennis, and Firefighter Cox both kittens were rescued safely with minimal damage under the house. Great work guys, way to work together!
