“When will you all get an ambulance?”
“Why don’t you have an ambulance?”
“How will they ever land a helicopter in that corn field?”

Well boy howdy do we have exciting news for you! Our area has unique challenges, complex driveways, wooded terrain… and we have never been able to figure out the best approach for providing safe emergency medical care to our neighbors. Luckily, we’re able to partner with John Deere and make our dreams come true. Today, your volunteers took delivery of the very first JD-ALS33 ambulance and JD-CRNCHPPER33 medical helicopter!

We, naturally, couldn’t do this without the support of April 1st. Thank you to the calendar for providing us this amazing opportunity.

To our community: recently, one of our members was in a major accident. However, if he wasn’t as stubborn as we all know him to be (and lucky…) he may have not made it out of the vehicle, out of the river, and up the otherwise impassible riverbank to the road to flag down a passing medic for help. The shocking thing? The only 9-1-1 calls about the accident weren’t about his vehicle crashing, nobody saw it… they just saw a muddy and bloody man on 60 trying to flag down cars. So, a “deranged man trying to stop cars on 60” was called in… if he never made it up and out, nobody would’ve known… except his dad, because at the time of the accident, our member’s iPhone alerted his emergency contact, his dad, of the accident.

We encourage, strongly, that if you have an IPhone (14 or Newer) setting up 2 pieces on the phone’s settings.

Medical ID: Medical ID helps first responders access your critical medical information from the Lock screen, without needing your passcode. They can see information like allergies and medical conditions as well as who to contact in case of an emergency.

Car Crash Crash Detection: If your iPhone or Apple Watch detects a severe car crash, your device can help connect you to emergency services.

Tonight members took time to go over fire behavior, including:
- Backdrafts
- Flashovers
- Fog v Straight Stream for Fire Attack
- Fog application in closed compartments (a throwback to the Lloyd Layman Era Tactics)
- How ventilation affects fire growth and spread
- How “close before you sleep” and isolating from the fire room stops fire spread.

Trainings like this are valuable for new and older members alike. Thanks to FF Beardsley for building the house, and to LT Smith for leading the training.

UPDATE 3/1/26 @ 10:28a:
A parent responsible for one of the juveniles came forward. I'm going to leave the post up as a general public notice: We love our community, and we love having visitors! But... we have to be there for you to visit. The fire department building is considered a secure facility to comply with State of Ohio Pharmacy Board requirements, and as such, is under external and internal video monitoring 24/7.

PREVIOUS POST:
Duncan Falls! We had a couple... visitors, last night! The issue is, nobody was at the fire station, but the group of teenagers let themselves in and walked around for a while, and then left.

Parents: If these are your teenagers, now is a great time to call the fire department at: 740-674-4444 - We will be posting the screenshots and video(s) of our camera system at 7pm this evening if we don't hear from anyone. Have a good Sunday!

A busy day for your volunteers!

Saturday had us busy with an Assist EMS call and two brush fires.

Our new Gator performed well in the tough conditions, but the real performers were the volunteers, giving up hours of their Saturday to help serve the communities they live in.

For the community, by the community.

Update: just completed our third brush fire. Smokey would be disappointed.

Today your volunteers had to help out a furry citizen that got a little too curious about the ice on the river. Luckily, the call had a paw-sitive outcome.

Most fatal house fires happen at night, not because the fire was unstoppable, but because no one was alerted in time.

Duncan Falls Volunteer Fire Department is offering free smoke detector installation for residents in our response area. (Wayne, Salt Creek, and Blue Rock Townships) We’ll provide the detector, install it properly, and make sure it’s placed where it can actually protect you and your family.

This is especially important if:
• Your home has no detectors
• Your detectors are over 10 years old
• You hear chirping and just… ignore it (we’ve all been there)
• You have elderly family members or young children in the home

There is no cost and no catch. This is a prevention program, we’d much rather help you avoid an emergency than respond to one.

If you’d like detectors installed, fill out the quick request form below and we’ll contact you to schedule a visit:

Please share this with neighbors and family in the area. The detector that saves a life is usually the one installed before anyone thinks they need it.

In 2025 Your volunteers responded 183 times for fires, accidents, medical assists, and everything in between. Behind each number was a neighbor who needed help and a crew that showed up.

We are proud of the dedication shown by our members throughout the year. Volunteers balanced family time, full-time jobs, and interrupted meals to make sure the community stayed protected. Mutual aid continued to go both ways with our neighboring departments, and we’re grateful for the relationships that make all of us stronger.

Thank you to the families who support our members, to the employers who allow them to answer calls during the workday, and most of all to the residents who trust us to be there when things go wrong.

We’re excited to continue that momentum into 2026 and remain committed to serving our community with professionalism, safety, and pride.

It’s been a busy 24 hours for your volunteers! 6 calls and counting for the weekend, including two fires.

With the cold weather approaching, we’d like to remind everyone of these safety tips:

• If you’re using space heaters, keep at least 3 feet of clearance from curtains, furniture, and bedding.

• Plug space heaters directly into the wall — never into power strips or extension cords.

• Never leave any heater running unattended, and always turn them off before going to bed.

• For kerosene or propane heaters, ensure proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.

• If using a fireplace or wood stove, have your chimney and flue checked and cleaned.

• Keep generators outside and away from doors, windows, and vents — they produce deadly CO gas.

• Make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries and are working properly.

Stay Safe! 🥶 🚒
