Stephens County Offices and Departments will participate in a Tornado Drill at 12:30 PM on Monday, March 9th.

This exercise is part of ongoing efforts to test and improve emergency notification procedures, department emergency action plans, accountability processes, and coordination.

During this time, you may hear notifications or observe employees practicing protective actions. THIS IS ONLY A DRILL.

Preparedness exercises like this help ensure Stephens County remains ready to respond effectively during severe weather events and other emergencies.

Duncan Emergency Management is partnering with Stephens County Emergency Management and the National Weather Service to provide 2026 Storm Spotter Training Monday March 30th at 6:30 p.m. in the Prairie Room at the Stephens County Fairgrounds, 2002 S 13th.

Meteorologists from the National Weather Service in Norman conduct storm spotter training sessions each year to help prepare spotters for the upcoming severe weather season.

Training is free and typically lasts about 2 hours. You'll learn:

*Basics of thunderstorm development
*Fundamentals of storm structure
*Identifying potential severe weather features
*Information to report
*How to report information
*Basic severe weather safety

PLEASE NOTE: Storm spotting is not the same as "storm chasing."

UPDATE: Stephens County Courthouse will be CLOSED Tuesday, January 27th due to hazardous travel conditions.

Due to hazardous winter weather conditions affecting Stephens County, the Stephens County Courthouse will be CLOSED on Friday, January 23rd and Monday, January 26th.

The safety of our employees and citizens is our top priority. Deteriorating road conditions and ongoing winter precipitation are forcasted to make travel dangerous throughout the county.

Essential emergency services will remain operational. For emergencies, please dial 911.

The courthouse is expected to reopen on January 27th weather permitting. Updates will be provided through local media outlets.

We urge all residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay off roadways if possible, and monitor local weather forecasts.

This week is all about creating defensible space! The time is now to prepare your home to be more wildfire resilient. Start by assessing how defensible your home and property is should wildfire occur by focusing on the Home Ignition Zone. More detailed information can be found at: https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/wildfire/preparing-homes-for-wildfire
β€’ In the 0-5’ area around your home remove burnable material including leaves/pine needles, flammable plants, mulch and firewood.
β€’ The 5-30’ area maintain should have grass mowed short, trees pruned and spaced avoiding the more flammable species.
β€’ In the 30-100’+ zone remove dead plants and trees and dispose of heavy accumulations of ground litter and debris such as brush piles.

Defensible space around your home and outbuildings reduces the potential for structure damage/loss and enhances probability of success for fire personnel.
