250 years ago today, a congregation of men - some farmers, some lawyers, some politicians, some philosophers - met in Philadelphia to declare their independence from England. Upon the inscription of those 56 names, any differences among them fell into the shadow of their unification as Americans. These men formed an imperfect union, one that for the last 250 years millions of Americans toiled - and continue to work - to make this nation better.
While America should remain grateful for our founders and those who risked their riches, reputations, and lives to forge a free nation, one country under God, we must also relish the sacrifices of the ordinary folks who, again, have and continue to craft a more perfect union.
Whether the farmers who feed us, the industrialists who built our cities, the workers who drove America's economic engine, the Pastors, Rabbis and Priests who pray for America's successive blessings, the soldiers who sacrificed time, health, and even their lives for our liberties, and everyone else who contributed to this beautiful mosaic composed of our 50 states, America remains a special place where the individual can play the most pivotal role in our society through civic participation.
Despite our struggles, we remain intact, strong, blessed, and free. May we forever toil to maintain our "Shining City Upon a Hill" that billions across the world seek to emulate or join.
