Welcome to the Town of Tyrone, New York. Located in Schuyler County and encompassing most of Waneta and Lamoka Lakes, Tyrone covers approximately 40 square miles and serves approximately 1,600 residents. The Town provides services for its residents, including highway maintenance, snow removal, code enforcement, fire protection and general government support. The Town’s total budgeted appropriation
s for the 2014 fiscal year were approximately $1.2 million, funded primarily with real property taxes, sales tax and State aid. The Town is governed by an elected Town Board, comprising a Supervisor and four Board members and is responsible for the general management and control of the Town’s financial affairs. The Supervisor serves as the chief executive officer and chief fiscal officer and is responsible for receiving, disbursing and maintaining custody of Town money, maintaining accounting records and providing financial reports to the Board. The Supervisor also serves as the Town’s budget officer. The Town of Tyrone was first settled around 1800 and became a part of the the newly formed Schuyler county in 1854. It is home to Altay, Camp Gorton, Gingerbread Corners, Pine Grove, Tyrone, Wayne and Weston. It is believed that a Lamoka Lake Site contains the remains of an Archaic hunting and gathering settlement from 3500 BC. The Site was named a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
