Dundee Kroger Store Targeted by Two Separate Liquor Thieves on Monday Afternoon - One in Custody
The Dundee Police Department responded to two separate retail fraud complaints Monday August 10th at the Dundee Kroger located at 571 E, Monroe St. in the Village of Dundee.
The first theft occurred at 5:00pm. Four men, described as one white male and three black males loaded a shopping cart with nearly $1000.00 worth of liquor and alcohol and then proceeded past all points of purchase and exited the store. Kroger employees and witnesses followed. The subjects were told that the police were on the way as they continued to load their vehicle with the stolen merchandise. The vehicle was described as a red 2017 Alfa Romeo sedan with a Virginia registration plate. While the thieves were loading, a store employee was able to retrieve the grocery cart still containing more than half of the stolen liquor and returned to the store. The thieves jumped into their car and sped off out of the lot.
Dundee Police responded and obtained information from store management and witnesses. The store recovered $549.00 of the liquor and estimated that the stolen amount was less than $500.00. Using the Virginia plate for a search in the Flock License Plate Reader system, investigating officers determined that the thieves likely headed eastbound after the theft, as the plate was not identified on the village's ALPR cameras downtown or near US-23. A further check discovered that the plate was recorded on the Flock system in Monroe and the Detroit area.
While still investigating the first theft, Dundee Police were called back to Kroger at 5:55pm on another retail fraud involving liquor.
The store manager stated that a young white man grabbed two bottles of liquor and ran out of the store to a vehicle. The manager was able to obtain an image of the suspect's vehicle. However, a portion of the license plate number was obscured.
Officers searched the partial license plate into the FLOCK system.
It returned with several recent images of the vehicle in the Dundee area, including a clear image of the license plate.
A check of the registration identified the vehicle’s owner as an individual known to area officers. While traveling to the individual’s residence, the investigating officer observed the suspect's vehicle on a nearby roadway.
Officers conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The driver admitted to stealing the items from the Kroger store earlier. The driver, an 18-year-old Dundee man was arrested for retail fraud and lodged at the Monroe County Jail. The stolen merchandise was recovered and returned to Kroger. A report has been turned over to the prosecutor for charges. The Michigan State Police and Monroe County Sheriff's Office assisted.
