Today around 1700 hours while doing some TLC on Engine 5-2 after its return from Seagrave, crews noticed a Black smoke column coming from the top of the hill. Moments after Area Box 5-04 was sounded for “The Building Fire” Engine, Squad and Tanker hit the road simultaneously. Engine 5-1 arrived to find a 1 Story Type 2 Burger King with smoke showing from the roof top. Crews located a fire in the exhaust vent on the roof and extinguished the same, no further extension was found, crews operated for just around an hour. Chief 5A held the command.

National Night Out – Shores of Calvert

Last night, the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department was proud to participate in National Night Out with the Shores of Calvert community.

Members staffed Engine 51, Rescue Squad 5, Tanker 5, Brush 5, and Deputy Chief 5, giving residents the opportunity to meet their volunteers, explore the apparatus, ask questions, and learn more about the services we provide. As always, the kids stole the show—climbing aboard the trucks, checking out the equipment, and making memories with our members.

Events like National Night Out are a great reminder that strong communities are built on relationships. We appreciate the opportunity to connect with our neighbors, promote public safety, and share what it means to serve the Dunkirk community.

A big thank you to the Shores of Calvert community for inviting us and to everyone who stopped by to say hello. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

This has been a need within our department for quite some time, and we’re excited to finally have these in service. Not only do they provide a professional appearance, but they’ll serve our members well for years to come.

Thank you again to the team at Arundel Leatherworks for delivering a quality product and making this project such a success. We appreciate your support of the fire service!

Training in Our Community

A big thank you to Northern High School for allowing the members of the Dunkirk Volunteer Fire Department to utilize their facility for hands-on training today.

Our probationary members completed portions of their Probationary Engine Packet, with today’s focus on standpipe operations, long-line hose stretches, extending handlines, and large-area search techniques. Training in a real-world environment is invaluable, providing realistic challenges that simply can’t be replicated on the drill ground.

The opportunity also allowed experienced members to refamiliarize themselves with the school’s layout while giving newer members their first walkthrough of one of the largest buildings in our first due area.

We greatly appreciate our partnership with Northern High School and are thankful for the opportunity to train in the communities we serve. Realistic training helps ensure we’re prepared when our neighbors need us most.

Late Entry: Mutual Aid Response to Serious MVC with Entrapment

Last week, Squad 5 responded as part of the mutual aid assignment to Anne Arundel County for a reported motor vehicle collision with entrapment in the area of Solomons Island Road and Old Solomons Island Road.

Upon arrival, crews found a single vehicle that had left the roadway and struck a tree, causing significant damage and trapping the occupant inside. Firefighters worked alongside Anne Arundel County Fire Department personnel to stabilize the vehicle, perform a complex extrication, and assist EMS crews in providing patient care.

Due to the severity of the incident, Maryland State Police’s GO Team was initially requested to respond. As the incident progressed, the request was later canceled. The patient was ultimately transported by helicopter to a local trauma center for definitive care.

Incidents like these highlight the importance of a strong mutual aid system. When neighboring jurisdictions call for assistance, departments work seamlessly together to provide the resources and personnel needed during critical emergencies.

We appreciate the outstanding teamwork displayed by all responding agencies and wish the patient the very best in their recovery.
