A few notes after reading the study allegedly linking acetaminophen to NDD’s.

1) This study was a qualitative synthesis of many published articles. They took a bunch of existing research and cross-analyzed it for patterns. It’s very common, but it’s an important distinction that the authors did not conduct additional research.

2) Because it’s a qualitative synthesis (rather than a quantitative meta-analysis), this makes it harder to compare studies from a numbers perspective. Each one is given similar weight, regardless of contributing factors, sample sizes, and other research practices.

3) Correlation does NOT imply causation. From their analysis, the authors gleaned that there may be a casual relationship between acetaminophen and NDDs. The general consensus was that prolonged and unsupervised usage poses a potential danger, but this is generally accepted. When faced with other dangerous ailments though, the potential risks of acetaminophen may be worth it to avoid fetal harm.

4) More research is needed. Inserting my own opinion now, future studies should also account for other variables such as the quality of air, water, and food, economic status, family health, and access to consistent medical care.

5) But is there a connection? Maybe, maybe not! One synthesis should not upturn an entire system. If you’re uncomfortable using acetaminophen based on this study, don’t use it. That said, don’t also treat this study’s inconclusive findings as fact.

From a research perspective, flash headlines make me shake my head because they don’t provide necessary context. They whip people into a frenzy and muddy the work of researchers. When in doubt, the original source material is *always* the best source of information.

Accessibility and inclusion are key tenets of a healthy society. I am proud to have voted YES on the installation of this nonverbal message sign. It may seem like a small project, but to many families it provides access and shows that we are committed to making our public spaces accommodating to everyone!

It is an honor to represent such a forward thinking community, and, as a candidate for HD15, I hope to spread this message of inclusion across the district.

I’m in this race because we deserve better than politicians who play with our lives and futures and call it good responsible government. It’s time for new leadership.

The labor movement built this country, and unions secured so many of the workplace rights we take for granted. This Labor Day, we honor the sacrifices of our labor brothers and sisters and stand together in solidarity as we continue the fight for fair wages, safe workplaces, and dignity on the job. Solidarity forever!

Congratulations to Catelin Drey, State Senator-Elect for District 1!

This is a decisive win in a district Trump carried by 11 points. This is not an isolated incident either - Iowans in numerous special elections this year have shifted toward Democratic candidates and their messages of better government that works for the people.

These races show us that anything is possible going into next year’s midterm election!

It’s the first day of school for most districts in Iowa!

Good luck to our education professionals and students as they start a new year of learning! Make it a great one!

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

You don’t have to have political power to make meaningful change in your communities. Sometimes it just takes a small group of people that want to make the world a better place.

The newest mission for the Harrison County Dems is to help our neighbors wherever we see a need.

This morning’s food drive project went to theMatthew's House Food Pantry in Mondamin, an outstanding organization that supports communities in Harrison and Monona counties.

You can’t demonize educators and then act surprised when they leave the profession.

Iowans deserve better than politicians playing politics with our childrens’ futures. It really is that simple.

If you have a “freedom loving” legislator, ask them if they voted for censorship, regulation of personal medical decisions, and restrictions on local tax levies.

Freedom isn’t control, it’s choice.
It really is that simple.

If your legislator is a “fiscal conservative,” ask them if they support public oversight for private schools that take publicly funded vouchers. The answer is telling.

Public money demands public oversight. It really is that simple.
