Snow accumulations, combined with after-effects of plowing roads may result in fire hydrants being partially, or completely, buried in snow. If you are physically able to do so, please clear a three-foot area free of snow and ice around nearest fire hydrant. #FCFRD #weather

What You Need to Know About Limited Vaccine Supply
-----------------------------------------
The Virginia Department of Health expects to receive 105,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine each week starting this week and will be initiating a per capita distribution to jurisdictions. With this new process, the Health Department will be responsible for distributing vaccine to providers in our health district. The overall decrease in Virginia’s vaccine allocation, a result of limited supplies nationally, is going to significantly limit the pace at which we vaccinate the more than 156,000 residents in Phase 1a and 1b priority groups who have registered through the Health Department’s online application system and are currently in the queue to receive an appointment.

Unfortunately, vaccine supply remains very limited so we ask for your patience as it may take months for some people to get an appointment time.

While the focus of Community Risk Reduction Week is on attempting to prevent fire and injury, the fact is bad things will still happen. When it does, most adults know to call or text 9-1-1.
What if you were with your child(ren), became incapacitated and needed FCFRD help? Would they know to call 9-1-1? Do they know how to call? Would they know what to say to the 9-1-1 call taker?
Take a moment to teach them. Watch below video to learn more. Please note that you should not have your child actually call 9-1-1 when practicing.

FIRE IS DEADLY!
Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do.
Fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous gases that kill. Breathing even small amounts of smoke and toxic gases can make you drowsy, disoriented and short of breath. The odorless, colorless fumes can lull you into a deep sleep before the flames reach your door. You may not wake up in time to escape.

FIRE IS DARK!
Fire isn't bright, it's pitch black.
Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness. If you wake up to a fire you may be blinded, disoriented and unable to find your way around the home you've lived in for years.

FIRE IS HOT!
Heat is more threatening than flames.
A fire's heat alone can kill. Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 F at floor level and rise to over 1,000 F at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air will scorch your lungs. This heat can melt clothes to your skin. In five minutes a room can get so hot that everything in it ignites at once: this is called flashover.

FIRE IS FAST! There is little time!
In less than 30 seconds a small flame can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a home. In minutes, a home can be engulfed in flames. If you wake up to a fire, you won't have time to grab valuables because fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. There is only time to escape.

Are you a CPR-trained resident of Fairfax County? If so, consider downloading the PulsePoint app to be alerted of cardiac events requiring CPR in public areas near you. More information from Chief Butler in the below video!

Fire Chief John Butler is pleased to announce the official launch of the PulsePoint mobile app in Fairfax County. PulsePoint is a 9-1-1 connected mobile app that alerts CPR-trained residents to someone in a nearby, public location experiencing Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

SCA is a leading cause of preventable death. For every minute that passes before help arrives, SCA survival decreases by 7%-10%. The PulsePoint app alerts resident bystanders nearby, trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), who can help victims before Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department firefighters and paramedics arrive. It also directs these potential resident rescuers to the exact location of the closest Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

The PulsePoint mobile app can be found in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.

Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Week starts tomorrow, Monday, January 18 and ends on Sunday, January 24, 2021. If you are not familiar with the term Vision 20/20, the nationally recognized authority on Community Risk Reduction, defines CRR as, “a process to identify and prioritize local risks, followed by the integrated and strategic investment of resources (emergency response and prevention) to reduce their occurrence and impact.” CRR is more than installing smoke alarms and educating on the importance of properly discarding smoking materials. CRR programs require a comprehensive assessment of the community we serve and effective plans for each identified risk.

#FCFRD strives to not only respond to emergencies but also act as a primary resource for risk reduction. We use CRR to identify high risk demographics and safety education topics that will most impact the safety of the community we serve.

If you're looking for a place to make an end-of-year donation, might we suggest the DLVFRD. It's been a rough year for our fundraising efforts, with the loss of bingo operation for much of the year.

We have several large costs upcoming including the purchase of a new medic unit and replacement of our roof.

For information on how to donate please see our website, and thank you for considering us!! https://www.dlvfrd.org/donate

Without the generous support of citizens, businesses and civic groups of our community, the Dunn Loring Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department would not be able to provide the quality of service that the community has grown to expect over the last 75+ years.
