Last Friday, our President, Stephanie Feinberg was honored as the very first Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Volunteer of the Year at a ceremony at Public Safety HQ.

Stephanie is a very active riding member, mentor to our new members, an academy instructor, the corporate President for Dunn Loring and a key member of several Fairfax County committees representing the volunteer system. Stephanie is truly the entire package of a model volunteer and we are extremely proud that she is our friend, mentor, peer and a key leader in our department.

Congratulations Stephanie!

(From L to R, Dunn Loring Fire Chief Shawn P. Stokes, President Stephanie Feinberg and Fairfax County Fire Chief John S. Butler)

Congratulations, PFF Rambo!

Station 13, Dunn Loring, B-Shift presented Probationary Firefighter Jarod Rambo with his Station 13 patch. The patch is earned. He did so by lots of hard work of proving himself to the crew, learning his first due streets, equipment location and functions, and performance on emergency scenes. #FCFRD

Yesterday, members of Dunn Loring, Vienna and McLean VFD’s were interviewed by Voice of America TV for a piece on fire service volunteering in the United States for their Russian language service.

In addition we demonstrated various skills to be recorded for the piece and accomplished probie firefighter training at the same time.

We were honored to be able to represent our over 1.1 million brothers and sisters in promoting the American fire service.

Some pretty cool department history happened 71 years ago today. Anton Groff became the first paid employee at the DLVFRD. Happy birthday, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department!

Today, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) celebrates its 71st birthday!

On July 1, 1949, the first 10 career firefighters were hired at an annual salary of $2,500.00. The first to be hired was Samuel Redmond who was issued badge #1 and assigned to Station 1 (McLean). Career firefighters were called “paid men” and served primarily as daytime apparatus drivers. The various chiefs of the volunteer departments would choose the personnel who would be hired by the County and ultimately work for their departments. This practice would continue for many years. As members of their respective volunteer departments these firefighters responded to “after hours” calls from their homes.

The department has grown exponentially since its inception. Today, FCFRD is a career and volunteer organization providing fire suppression, emergency medical, technical rescue, hazardous materials, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation services. There are approximately 1,400 career firefighters, 170 civilians, and 370 operational volunteers making the FCFRD the largest fire department in the Commonwealth of Virginia and one of the best in the nation. We continue the traditions of our past with a commitment to service excellence and a vision to protect the lives, property, and environment of our community.

Just a little fire safety reminder as we enter Phase 2 today!
06/12/2020

Just a little fire safety reminder as we enter Phase 2 today!

Today, Fairfax County enters Phase Two of reopening which means more business will be open. While this is wonderful news, #FCFRD wants to remind all businesses of the need to maintain clear access to all exits. Businesses should not compromise the need for multiple exit routes even when there is a reduced number of occupants in the business. As these exits are blocked or restricted, the danger increases for the employees and customers.

Please understand that the basic tenets necessary to establish a reasonable level of life safety from the hazards of fires and other dangerous conditions need to be relied upon even in this time of crisis.

FCFRD knows the Fairfax County business community are doing everything they can to keep employees and customers safe during these trying times. Maintaining safe exits is fundamental to occupant and customer safety.

Way to go, Firefighter/EMT Auer!!

Dr. Avstreih, Office of the Medical Director, recognized Firefighter Katie Auer, Station 13, Dunn Loring, A-Shift Tuesday for her calm, excellent care of an infant having an airway emergency. She quickly set up the pediatric airway equipment for Firefighter/Paramedic Bachmann. Firefighter Auer inspected the baby’s mouth and visualized “something shinny” and pulled out a thumbnail sized sticker. Baby then produced a very strong cry and his color improved. She also did an excellent job reassuring the parents. Great job! #FCFRD
