Save the Shaw Halfway House

Save the Shaw Halfway House Partially hidden from plain sight, off in a field in Harnett county, NC, sits one of the best kept secrets in Harnett county!

Built in 1798 by Daniel "Poplar Foot" Shaw, shortly after the Revolutionary War, this house has survived the extension of the Revolutionary War (War of 1812), the Civil War and the ravages of time for a reason. The house was left to Daniel's son, Dushee Shaw. Dushee lived in the house until about 1839 and decided to move to Texas and sold to the Turlington family. The house was purchased by Averas

boro Town Restoration Association, Inc (a non-profit) in Dec. 2016 and has begun the long process of restoration. No one lives now who personally knew the famous or infamous who crossed its threshold. The house was built as a tavern/house on the Fayetteville to Raleigh stage road, it soon became a popular stage stop for weary travelers. The house was also used as a hospital for wounded soldiers from the Battle of Averasboro in 1865. Names of soldiers can still be seen where they were engraved/scratched/ written on the walls .
