Dear Citizens of Dunreith and Southern Spiceland Township:

My name is Jason Greene, Fire Chief of Dunreith Volunteer Fire Department (DVFD). Like you, I watched the Dunreith Town Board meeting for June 2026 and found it disturbing as many of you did. In no way shape or form, did I initiate or advocate for the cancellation of the Fire Department contract. If I had, I would have sent the town a certified letter at least 180 days before December 31st, as the contract requires.

DVFD has not received any payment from the Town for the year 2025. The Town also has kept the contract money from Spiceland Township for fire protection services in the Southern part of the township. In years past the Town gave DVFD the Township money, which the Township Trustee intended to be used for DVFD.

DVFD is hoping to reach some type of agreement with the Town, as we have in the past. DVFD has tried to reach a resolution with the town, but to no avail, as the Town will not negotiate with DVFD.

Approximately 6 weeks ago, the Town’s attorney did send a certified letter to our attorney stating that they were terminating the contract as of 12/31/2026. As it stands now, as 1/1/2027, DVFD will no longer provide fire protection/Ems services for Dunreith or the Southern Spiceland Township, but until then DVFD will faithfully serve the citizens of Dunreith and Southern Spiceland Township.

At this month’s monthly meeting DVFD members trained on ladder types and minds placement and why/where we put them in place. We also went over V.E.I.S(vent enter isolate search) of a structure and the importance of it. Members also worked on R.I.T(rapid intervention team) scenarios and got reps in using our rit pack setup. Final thing members trained on was a “May Day” situation of a downed fire fighter and the importance of having a rit team in place to help in the saving of a downed member.
