Tomorrow, Wednesday, September 2, is the first day of school for the Steilacoom Historical School District. Let’s kick off the new school year on a positive note by slowing down and making the commute to school a safe one for students, parents, and staff.

When driving through the school zones, please reduce your speed to 20 miles per hour and be extra cautious of pedestrians crossing the street, especially when approaching intersections and crosswalks.

The school zone speed cameras on Center Drive will be activated, with hours of operation set by the Steilacoom Historical School District. Additionally, DuPont officers will be out and about stopping speeding vehicles and welcoming students as they begin the new school year.

Remember to always be aware of school buses and never pass a bus dropping off or picking up students.

By being vigilant, slowing down, and taking a few extra minutes to reach your destination, it helps to ensure that everyone stays safe.

Deputy Chief Lopez and Officer Bentz were honored to participate in the Cowlitz Indian Tribe Back to School Safety Fair this past weekend. Deputy Chief Lopez gave a very informative presentation on Internet Safety that included important safety tips for both teenagers and adults about how to keep themselves safe while online.

We appreciate the Cowlitz Indian Tribe’s invitation to participate, and we look forward to working together in the future.

At approximately 10:00 AM today, the DuPont Police Department was contacted by a federal law enforcement agent with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) informing us of an enforcement stop and detention conducted within the DuPont city limits. We were provided no advance notice of this operation. Our department's sole involvement was being notified after the fact regarding an unoccupied vehicle left roadside, which was subsequently handled according to standard parking and impound procedures.

In accordance with Washington State law (RCW 10.93.160, the Keep Washington Working Act):

· Local and state law enforcement agencies do not enforce civil federal immigration law.
· Primary jurisdiction for civil immigration enforcement rests solely with federal authorities.
· Washington law statutorily prohibits local law enforcement officers from taking individuals into custody, holding individuals, or providing operational assistance based solely on civil immigration matters.

Even if prior notification had been given, DuPont officers would have been legally prohibited from participating or assisting in this federal civil enforcement action.

Our department remains committed to transparency, community trust, and the rule of law. Our mission is to ensure public safety and serve all members of our community without fear of crime.

DuPont officers actively patrol the city streets daily, stopping vehicles and issuing tickets for speeding. Driving too fast and violating the speed limit puts everyone on the road in serious danger. DPD encourages drivers to check the posted speed limits and account for weather, traffic, and road conditions.

The DuPont Police Department was honored to work alongside the Nisqually Indian Tribe and Chief Bruner of the Nisqually Police Department with the planning of the 2026 Canoe Journey and Ceremonial Landing in DuPont. We value our relationship with the Nisqually Indian Tribe and Chief Bruner, and we look forward to more opportunities to work together in the future.

On Friday, July 31, the parking lot in front of City Hall and the public safety buildings will be closed to the public for the 2026 Canoe Journey. Public parking will be available in the vacant lot across the street from City Hall and at PowderWorks Park.

The Canoe Journey event is anticipated to bring a significant number of visitors to our city. Throughout the day, there may be areas of congested traffic, particularly along main roads such as Center Drive and Steilacoom DuPont Road. Some residential areas may also experience heavy traffic as event attendees navigate their way through the city. We understand that this may slow down travel times, and we kindly ask for your patience and understanding. Please allow for extra travel time if you have appointments or other planned activities.

The DuPont Police Station lobby will be closed during the event; however, officers are available to assist residents by phone or in person. If you need to speak to an officer about an incident that does not require an immediate response, please call the non-emergency dispatch line at (253) 287-4455. For all emergencies, dial 911.

This week we said goodbye to Sergeant Dan Saboe, as he retires from a career spanning more than thirty years in law enforcement, including over twenty-one years of dedicated service to the DuPont Police Department. As a resident, a neighbor, and a member of this community, Dan has had a personal investment in making this city the very best it could be. Every decision he made, every problem he solved, and every interaction he had was guided by a genuine desire to improve the community for everyone who lives, works, and visits here.

Over the past twenty-one years, Dan has served in a variety of key assignments: Defensive Tactics Instructor, Field Training Officer, Operations Sergeant, Acting Lieutenant, and Special Events Coordinator. One of Dan's most enduring contributions has been his service as the Regional Honor Guard Commander.
Dan, we thank you for preparing generations of officers to serve with a sense of Duty, Professionalism and Dedication, for honoring our fallen with dignity, and for over twenty-one years of dedicated service to the DuPont Police Department.

Have a long and happy retirement, Dan!
