Brightwood Farm, LLC Brightwood Farm is a diversified, small family farm located in the Animas River Valley, just north of Durango, Colorado.

We produce certified organic vegetables year-round and maintain a small herd of Jersey dairy cows and a few Tunis sheep. Our varied farm enterprises are chosen to complement each other in a sustainable whole.

Happy first day of spring! We woke up to 3 1/2 inches of new snow this morning, but most had melted by the afternoon. Despite the snow, signs of spring are quite evident- robins and red winged blackbirds arriving, crocuses up, grass and clovers starting to green up, and the veggies in our hoophouse and under our outside row covers have noticed that there is a lot more sun now. It's an exciting time of year!

Hooray! Flora had her calf last night- a beautiful little heifer. We checked Flora in the evening and she didn't look like she was ready to give birth, but when we checked her in the morning there the two of them were, relaxing in the barn. Yay Flora!

We took a day off this week for a trip to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison- both dogs did great on the drive :) We went for a few short hikes and thoroughly enjoyed the spectacular scenery! The canyon itself is almost unbelievably deep and narrow, cutting through some of the oldest rocks on earth. All in all a delightful day off!

Our Story

We are getting settled in our new location in the Animas Valley, in the little town of Hermosa, just north of Durango, Colorado. We had an epic move, during an epic winter of snow, and are thoroughly enjoying settling in to our little 5 acre farm. We’re planning to grow vegetables, mostly in the ‘off-seasons’ of fall, winter and spring in our greenhouses which we will be building this summer. We also brought about 400 cuttings from our organic elderberry root stock with us and have planted them in a nursery area, with plans to transplant them in the fall to permanent permaculture beds. We will in time re-establish our small scale winery. Our diversified farm also includes livestock; our Jersey cow, two Tunis sheep, our guardian dog and barn cat which we brought with us from Virginia. We are committed to practicing regenerative agriculture; building soil carbon as we produce nutrient dense, delicious, healthy food.
